Rosalind Franklin discovered the DNA double helix in 1953, but she never won a Nobel Prize due to sexism.
Years later, Katalin Karikó was kicked out and forced to retire from academia.
Despite this, 70 years after Franklin's discovery, Karikó was awarded the Nobel Prize for developing life-saving #COVID vaccines from another nucleic acid, mRNA.

It takes no small amount of inquiry, from no few angles, to truly understand a form of art. This goes even more so for forms of art with which most of us in the 21st century have little direct experience.
I've started a substack! I'll be using it instead of Twitter threads to post about latest Covid situation, latest NHS stats etc.. easier to share here on Mastadon, but more importantly, ensures my content remains *free*!
Next week, I'll be posting about latest Covid situation but also a look back at all the data we *used* to have and common biases in Covid data !
If you've valued what I've been doing on social media, please do subscribe - it's free!
I’ve been um-ing and ah-ing about this for a while, but have decided to take the plunge and start a Substack, mainly because of the uncertainty about what is going to happen to Twitter - especially if Twitter starts charging users! My initial plan is to use Substack for the types of things I used to put into medium to longish Twitter threads - so things like analysis of the latest Covid data, discussions of the latest Covid research, state of the NHS, and - sometimes - posts about my other research in health care.
WHY IS CAPTIVITY A CURSE FOR DOLPHINS?
#Dolphins are built for the boundless #ocean, where they travel huge distances, socialise with their #pod, hunt for food, and navigate through challenges.
But in #captivity, their world shrinks drastically. They’re confined in limited spaces, surrounded by artificial environments, and subjected to continuous human interaction and unnatural behaviours, all for humans’ amusement.

There seems no end to the variety of beautiful tiling in the tenements of Glasgow. This was a design I came across today in a close in Yorkhill. It's repeated all the way up the stairs.

How on earth is this considered a good thing to do? Supporting people to insulate their homes and use less energy. Surely it pays itself back v quickly!

Rishi Sunak scraps home energy efficiency taskforce - BBC News
@janrosenow Personally, this is not really about #NetZero. It's simply signalling <12 months to the next election, making it look to the electorate like they'll save money under this government.
In essence it's like a virtual tax cut, without it actually being one - purely a short-term vote grab. The whole thing will be re-considered after the #election. #UKPolitics #Sunak #Starmer #UK @ChrisMayLA6
