Birthday weekend all set. Heading back to the western U.P. for the first time in 3-ish years. Thought about TRNP, Badlands, Grand Marais & the driftless before booking. I'll save those others for another time. Looking forward to all the solo photography, hiking, biking and kayaking I can do in 4 days.

I've got a bit of a complicated history with the place I grew up. Really, I'm sure a lot of us do. However, as difficult as that past was, there are some amazing things about it. There is some great natural beauty like this. There are some amazing people doing great things. From here on, that's what I'll choose to focus on rather than that past. I don’t know if you’ve noticed but I’m still lacking words for how to describe what I witnessed last Thursday. All I know is that I’m astonished every time I go through the 400 or so photos I made that night & have no idea how to whittle them down to the best. There are such subtle intricacies in some & who can say what image is better?
