Long time collaborators and friends are slowly migrating to Mastodon, so glad to see them!

With patience, step by step, we all will rebuild our network. Since our social relationships make the network, not the other way around.

Important enough that I'll reiterate it in my own words:

Remember: If you're emptying out your twitter and impersonation is a potential threat vector/security concern, don't deactivate it— 30 days later, anyone can grab it. Instead, keep it active, and lock it.

Take up server space and clock cycles, AND keep trolls from camping your shit and playing hell with your rep.

The federal "don't say gay" bill was introduced by homophobic GOP Louisiana Rep. Mike Johnson.

It equates sexual orientation and gender identity with pornography and “burlesque shows," & condemns "drag shows" on federal property.

It will incite more violence. The GOP owns it.

If you’re new to Mastodon, you may at some point find that you’re being pressured to put your posts behind a content warning (CW). Although CWs make sense for things like images of violence or nudity, some people are bullying others to put CWs on discussions of politics, racism, etc.
Please know that you should not feel pressured to obey these individuals. They do not speak for all. If someone does not want to be exposed to these topics, Mastodon gives them all the tools they need to avoid them, such as keyword filters and the ability to block or mute people who are posting things they don’t like.
The hardest part of making a website isn't the coding, it's the CONTENT.

Someone asked us earlier today how many of our Mastodon followers were established users vs newcomers. We weren't sure so...

Let's do a wildly unscientific survey!

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN ON MASTODON?

More than a year
14.4%
Less than a year but before Twitter sale (10/27)
6.7%
After Twitter sale but before 11/15
38.6%
I just joined in the last few days (since 11/15)
40.3%
Poll ended at .

Twitter's very existence depends on mDAU. This data—licensed to business, governments and anyone interested in purchasing it—is counting on people using Twitter daily.

There is no “stay and fight.” This is a fallacy. Staying literally lines the pockets of the (now) alt-right twitter.

The more interactions and likes and account has, the more personal information you inadvertently generate.

Not a big account? The app tracks you even when closed. You’re still contributing to its existence.

@seldo I was doing it because I've been told it's Mastodon culture and not to come in here and blap things out insensitively because that's Twitter culture 🤷🏻‍♀️

@seldo Totally agree with this. Very tired of the content warning scolders. Even the "it's really more of a content wrapper!" stuff. Nah.

"People are less likely to boost without a CW!" Fine. Good.

There are no rules for CW adoption, and if there are the instance should spell them out. Otherwise you're talking about norms and norms change as participants do.

Don't like it? Don't follow.

If you want my content, follow me. If you don't want it, don't follow me. Being randomly exposed to content that we dislike was the thing people complained about The Algorithm.
