Hey there, some personal news: I've decided to move on and am therefore looking for a new job starting July.

I loved serving as a program manager with open source projects involving some of the most brilliant software developers out there.

In a future job, I'd like to continue working near the intersection of open source, funding, business, policy and the societal impact of digital technology. But that's a small niche and so I hope that this post might open some doors through my contacts here. Are there OSS foundations or (non-) government orgs looking for staff?

Being a software developer at heart, I have been excited about tech all my life and later found myself involved in various software projects and business ventures big and small. I speak both fluent Nerd and fluent Business and frequently helped translating between the two during my career.

I'm aware that my requirements are a strong filter: Part-time and remote, German timezone. I'm also fairly unenthusiastic about the current generative AI / LLM hype and would prefer to work outside of that bubble.

If you have possible leads, I'd be grateful to hear about it. Thanks in advance and thanks for sharing.

Mastodon is 100% the early days of social media all over. Some of you will already be familiar with this story.

My weather station (a very nice Netatmo that has served very well) crapped out after nearly 10 years of excellent service. I asked for recommendations here for a new station that would play nicely with #HomeAssistant, and hopefully, also HomeKit. I received *many* recommendations, with Ecowitt (and the brands it manufactures for) taking the lead.

A connection on here offered me their *unopened* Ecowitt weather station for a very generous price. It arrived yesterday, and I set it up, and it's already doing a great job. Works offline, talks to Home Assistant without any problems. I just need to do a couple of bits of configuration jiggery-pokery and it will pass data to HomeKit.

This is very much how things were when I first joined Twitter in 2007. In spite of attempts at #enshittification of everything, the #fediverse is putting up a good fight.

May your day online be as satisfying as mine was yesterday.

LATER EDIT: I’ve been thinking, and I do realise this good experience isn’t necessarily what happens for everyone. It’s still the case that too many good people don’t find a welcoming place here, especially if they are queer or of color. If this is you, know that I see you, and that I will always try to be welcoming and listening, even if you have things to say that bring me discomfort.

Habe ich bei mir auch laufen, aber wenn man die öffentliche hat knallt man schnell in Limits bei den Suchmaschinen.

There are just people."

It's sad that kids today don't know the joy of defragging a hard drive or degaussing a monitor. Maybe it's why games were better back then.

Today I learned #TIL: "human.json"

human.json

Thanks to a toot by Seth Larson yesterday I learned about the still in draft human.json spec by Beto Dealmeida: human.json is a lightweight protocol for humans to assert authorship of their site content and vouch for the humanity of others. It uses URL ownership as identity, and trust propagates through a crawlable web of vouches between sites. Basically, a web of trust to confirm that pages are written by actual human beings vs just LLM generated slop.

foosel.net

As we are in the age of slop, I won’t accept any contribution to any of my open source code anymore.

And I make every one using AI for code responsible for that.

I think I need to extend on that.

Agentic coding is mighty. But it is like having a junior which is on a cocktail of speed, cocaine and ketamine. It also suffers from Alzheimer, ADHD and a learning disability. It forgets everything it does not write down, but then also fails regularly to check the own notes properly.

Anything more to add?
