As a self-proclaimed “Cocktail Evangelist” I must say the poll I did here that just completed has me a little concerned about how many people “never” make cocktails at home.

If you aren’t an abstainer, and don’t make cocktails at home, I am extremely curious as to why?

Bar Jiggers:
Obviously an important tool for reliably making great drinks. The conical double sided ones can be found everywhere. Harder, is to find them in the right sizes. The best combination is (1/2 ounce + 3/4 ounce) and (1 + 2). Easiest way to get almost any measure you need, but the 1/2+3/4 can be very difficult to find for some reason.

When measuring, you “fill to tension” so the liquid lifts just slightly above the rim.

The original name for this drink was apparently the Suffering Bar Steward as created by Joe Scialom at the Long Bar at the Shepheard Hotel in Cairo Egypt (from 1937 to 1952). But as one might expect in a noisy bar after a few drinks, the name gets a little mangled. There are several recipes for this floating about. For mine I turned to one of my favorite sources, Beachbum Berrry's Grog Log, by Jeff Berry.
