Suffering Bastard

(…continued from previous)
The original name for this drink was apparently the Suffering Bar Steward as created by Joe Scialom at the Long Bar at the Shepheard Hotel in Cairo Egypt (from 1937 to 1952). But as one might expect in a noisy bar after a few drinks, the name gets a little mangled. There are several recipes for this floating about. For mine I turned to one of my favorite sources, Beachbum Berrry's Grog Log, by Jeff Berry.
@DrinkBoy I wonder if “Bar Steward” was a wink-and-a-nod way to say the more vulgar “Bastard”? I have no actual evidence, just speculation given that “bar steward” seems like both an awkward and a convenient construction.

I feel that the entire name “suffering bar steward” is far more telling! 🤣
@DrinkBoy I can see a rationale both ways. 😂
@DrinkBoy Coincidentally, I sampled the version last night that will soon be on Sunken Harbor Club’s menu. They’re making their own lime cordial, which is a hassle, but there’s no way lime juice and sugar can properly sub for it. Also, using a homemade ginger beer, a little like the Gin Gin Mule’s. And then they carbonate it. The resulting drink tastes a lot like fizzy Japanese-style pickled ginger.

Oh‽ that sounds very interesting.
