Hanna Song of @twtNKDB said during the #Jeju Forum that fewer North Koreans are escaping to South Korea amid the COVID-19 pandemic, limiting their knowledge of what is occurring inside the country.
"Many experts are calling this the new dark ages," she said.
During the height of the NK famine, 2,000 escapees a year made it south.

“Just because we hear little about what is happening in North Korea, it doesn't mean nothing is happening,” she said.
The banners were erected the other day and will be up until after April 3, the memorial day for the massacre.
They read: “The Jeju April 3 lncident was a communist riot caused by Kim Il-sung and Namrodang against the founding of the Republic of Korea.”
Eighty banners claiming #Jeju 4.3 was ordered by late North Korean leader Kim Il-sung and the communist party have been erected on the island ahead of the 75th anniversary of the massacre.
Of the two I’ve seen today, both were slashed.
One I had seen this morning was whole when I passed.
By the afternoon, it was in shreds, and police were on the scene.
This year marks several grim anniversaries on #Jeju in particular the 75th anniversary of the Jeju Massacre.
It also marks the 45th anniversary of "Suni Samchon," a short story that would crack open decades of silence surrounding the massacre.
