The "Meeting & Status Seminar 2025" of the @dfg_public #SPP2299 Priority Programme "Tropical Climate Variability & Coral Reefs" took place last week in Bremen, Germany.

We were more than 50 participants from 28 national and international institutions.

Thanks to everyone who joined our Meeting & Status Seminar 2025 - It was such a mix of minds and experiences. It was not just about presentations - It was about connecting ideas, perspectives, and people. Events like this remind us why we do research: To explore, to question, and to grow - Together
Our #SPP2299 scientists are at #EGU25 in Vienna this week, presenting their research and discussing their ideas with geoscientists from all over the world.

New Paper Alert!
Check out a recently published study around on decadal oscillations in the world's largest oxygen-deficient zone. This research, by Nicolas Duprey from MPI for Chemistry, uses nitrogen isotopes in corals skeletons to understand natural climate variability of the Pacific ODZ.

About 60 international researchers from 12 nations and 30 institutions, including many from coral reef countries, met @unibremen and @MARUM to discuss tropical coral records of climate change and environmental stress. The meeting was organized by the @dfg_public funded Priority Programme "Tropical Climate Variability & Coral Reefs" #SPP2299 @ClimateReefs, which aims to improve our understanding of tropical marine climate variability and its impacts on coral reef ecosystems in a warming world

Luisa and Phyllis wrote a lovely piece covering the stunning location, some of the fascinating science, and the cultural exposure they got (they learnt how to make pirogi!)
Also who doesn't love fossil hunting!!

You can find their blog, among other programme activities on our website.

During September of 2023 a number of #SPP2299 members attended the 14th Symposium of the international Fossil Coral and Reef Society. Pictured here Are Luiza Meiritz (from @geomar_en) and Phyllis Mono (from @unileipzig). Also in attendance but not pictured Thomas Brachert (also from @unileipzig). The symposium took them from Warsaw to Checiny and finally to Krakow with a number of field work trips and interesting scientific sessions. Check out their blog on our website!

This week some of the SPP 2299 team met up at the Joint German IODP/ICDP Colloquium 2023, Hannover. @Thomas_Felis,Ed Hathorne, Eberhard Gischler, and also Norbert Frank (missing in the photo) @ECORD @dfg_public

If you missed it the #SPP2299 attended the European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly #egu2023 in April of this year! You can catch up on the conference, see the poster on our projects and all the conference abstracts associated with #SPP2299 members in our new blog, the link is here!

And recently two researchers based at the University of Kiel, Sally Ito and Konabe Watanabe, got the opportunity to talk to the next generation of scientists about coral reefs and climate science! 🪸

They discussed past, present and future climates; ran pracitcals on how to microsample corals; and talked about future careers! Check out our blog if you are interested!
