The "Meeting & Status Seminar 2025" of the @dfg_public #SPP2299 Priority Programme "Tropical Climate Variability & Coral Reefs" took place last week in Bremen, Germany.

We were more than 50 participants from 28 national and international institutions.

Thanks to everyone who joined our Meeting & Status Seminar 2025 - It was such a mix of minds and experiences. It was not just about presentations - It was about connecting ideas, perspectives, and people. Events like this remind us why we do research: To explore, to question, and to grow - Together
Our #SPP2299 scientists are at #EGU25 in Vienna this week, presenting their research and discussing their ideas with geoscientists from all over the world.

New Paper Alert!
Check out a recently published study around on decadal oscillations in the world's largest oxygen-deficient zone. This research, by Nicolas Duprey from MPI for Chemistry, uses nitrogen isotopes in corals skeletons to understand natural climate variability of the Pacific ODZ.

SPP 2299 is also committed to training the next generation of climate and coral reef scientists. Early-career researchers get hands-on experience with experts and learn techniques to help them tackle tomorrow's climate challenges.

Uncovering the Past to Safeguard the Future: SPP 2299’s Mission on UN World Science Day

The SPP 2299 research programme is dedicated to understanding tropical climate and coral reef ecosystems through several scientific disciplines, from coral paleoclimatology to biology, piecing together clues about past ocean temperatures and environmental responses to thermal extremes.

Welcome to all our new followers! We thought it would be a good time to reintroduce our programme, and as part of World Science Day for Peace and Development yesterday we published a blog that does just this!

As climate change impacts become harder to ignore, initiatives like the DFG Priority Programme “Tropical Climate Variability & Coral Reefs” SPP 2299) are more relevant than ever. SPP 2299 researchers look into Earth’s recent and distant past to understand and protect tropical ecosystems.
