Wired's Andy Greenberg has a terrific story out about the trio of young men who were the original authors and overlords of the Mirai "internet of things" botnet malware -- before they recklessly leaked its source code back in 2016 and stuck us with the dozens of Mirai IoT botnets we still have today.
Andy managed to convince all three to open up about their upbringing, how they got into cybercrime, and what they were thinking at every major step of the way.
To my mind, this story highlights two noteworthy facts about the Mirai investigation by law enforcement. Number one, the FBI almost certainly set a new speed record for investigating and prosecuting a major cybercrime case.
But also, it's hard to think of another cybercrime prosecution that resulted in a better outcome for all concerned.
Anyway, it's a long read, but well worth it:
