The only reason mastodon.social is in so many people's minds is because it was the first Masto server, but there is nothing special about it. You can interact with just as many people from other servers including the smallest servers. See https://joinmastodon.org/servers
(For example, my @homegrown account is on a server with no other members, but has over a thousand followers.)
