If you're running your own Fediverse server, it's important that people can contact you via the designated admin account.

Some servers have an admin profile saying "This account is unmonitored, send messages to @ xyz @ example.com", but most people don't read admin profiles and will miss this.

If you haven't got time to monitor your admin account, you can set it to email you when people mention or message the admin (on Mastodon this is at ⚙️ Preferences > Email Notifications).

To all the mail server admins in the wild:

What did you do so that Microsoft's MX servers accept mail deliveries from your own host?

By now I successfully handled mail deliveries to the following bitchy providers:

- GMX ✅
- Google ✅
- Hotmail ✅
- T-Online ✅

Outlook.com I can't test because...:

p.s. Nearest I can find to official documentation is this thread at https://socialhub.activitypub.rocks/t/fediverse-relays/4626/27 but it's a bit difficult to understand for non-developers 😦

Given that most admins use the GUI and relays are available through the GUI, there ought to be some kind of documentation telling admins what the GUI's relay options actually do? Does anyone know if this exists? I tried looking on https://docs.joinmastodon.org but couldn't find mention of relays?

Fediverse Relays

Thanks all for the discussion, as always I learned a lot … That second version is indeed how I was primarily thinking of it but I also intentionally phrased it broadly expecting that there might well be some aspects I hadn’t taken into account. I agree, with the caveat there are also weaker-but-still-useful versions of blocking that limit interactions (and visibility of interactions) in “well-behaved” software that isn’t intentionally trying to evade blocks. Bad actors can and will get arou...

Fediverse / ActivityPub experts, need some advice 🙂

I assume that subscribing to relays just pulls in posts to your server and doesn't affect your own posts' reach?

Is this a fair assessment, or does the relay subscription push your own posts to others in any way?

(Asking as some have claimed it does both?)

EDIT: Also, if anyone has any kind of links to official documentation for relays that would be useful.

p.s. Thank you to @scuttlebutt for telling me about the documentation that covers this feature! 🙏

Mastodon admins, is your server intended for people who speak a particular language?

Would you like your server website to always be shown in that language to everyone who hasn't logged in?

Mastodon 4.4.0+ may show your server's website in other languages without your knowledge. However, you can override this behaviour to set a language shown to everyone:

(Members who *have* logged in can still choose their own interface language though! 🙂 )

#FediBlock defederation recommended of volk.network

White supremacist instance, Nazi imagery too 🤮

EDIT: Should also defederate volk.love which is their peertube instance.

EDIT: Found it, thank you to @scuttlebutt ! 🥳 Don't need to boost any more, the documentation is at https://docs.joinmastodon.org/admin/config/#default_locale

Hey, would appreciate some advice as I cannot find this documented anywhere:

How does an admin set the default signed-out website UI language on their Mastodon instance? It doesn't seem to detect the user's language preferences until they sign in, but I can't find the default setting anywhere.

This relay info turned out to be super super useful.

I setup my instance to relay on a few specific hashtags, such as "Photography" and "Lumix". Now, when I hit those hashtags I find soooooo many posts out there. It's quite marvellous.

I can't recall seeing so much on these hashtags even when I was on a dedicated instance for photographers.

This has been a great result. Hooking up to just a few hashtags, instead of everything, is very clever.

If you're running a public Fediverse server, make sure you have money put aside for three months of running costs.

All public servers should do this before they even start up, even if they have no intention of closing down. It means if closure happens it happens gracefully, with plenty of time for your members to move elsewhere.

Clear closure plans give people confidence to join your server, and encourage its growth.

More info about how to plan for closure here:
