I've been busy digging up work since opting to do freelance feature writing full-time. It's a grind but I'm enjoying it. Here's my latest published piece: "Of #bats and blades," in ON Nature magazine. Expect more attacks on #wind turbines with Trump in office. Truth is, we need them. My piece explores why turbines take a big toll on three #migratory bat species and what can be done to stop it. Focus is on Ontario, but topic relevant across North America. https://catalog.ontarionature.org/winter-2024/page/18-19 [digital PDF]

Aurora has been going steady since sunset here in southern Ontario.
As #crows outnumber #ravens by a wide margin in my locale, it’s nice to see/hear and positively ID a pair of the latter flying over the yard. Just a quick, enlarged iPhone pic but you can make out the raven’s distinctive wedge tail. I also got a hit on the Merlin app for their call. #birds
#Grackles! Looking both ways.
Sunny morning after yesterday's snow and brutal cold meant lots of #birds at/under the feeders. Red-bellied #woodpecker was a highlight. Soon joined by a mourning dove... then a common #grackle... then a red-winged #blackbird. What a group!
Nice group of cedar #waxwings hanging around in the crabapple tree today. #greatbackyardbirdcount
Big weekend on tap. Ontario Liberals voting for a new leader. Who is best able to revive the party and then knock off Doug Ford? This video from current Beaches-East York federal MP Nate Erskine-Smith makes a great case for his candidacy. It would also stand up well in a provincial election campaign. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCT9728bCME
