I've written a new blog post on the #Trove API keys debacle that answers some questions raised by my first two posts, and provides some updates on recent actions by the National Library of Australia. https://updates.timsherratt.org/2025/04/11/update-on-trove-data-access.html Please share!

Update on Trove data access and my suspended API keys

On 21 February, my Trove API keys were cancelled without warning. A week later, I met with NLA staff and was shocked to be told that downloading ‘content’, such as the text of digitised newspaper articles, was regarded as a breach of the API terms of use. Without API access I can’t continue my work helping researchers make use of Trove. More generally though, the NLA’s actions threaten innovative digital research.

And surprise orchids! Super late and kinda high altitude bonnet orchid as well as my first midge (background removed in an attempt to get a better ID but I have zero idea lol)

Australia’s superb lyrebirds ‘farm’ the forest floor to increase their prey – a behaviour rarely seen in nature

“Farming” behaviour is very unusual in the non-human world. As lyrebirds forage, they cultivate the soil and shore up their own food sources.

The NLA's suspension of my #Trove API access has been picked up in this news story from the Australian Computing Society: https://ia.acs.org.au/article/2025/national-library-cracks-down-on-public-data-access.html #GLAM #OpenData

Great bird, excellent talons 💚

(Also highly recommend quiet outside moments amongst this absolute sh*t show)

Here’s 17 seconds of a preening lyrebird x 💚
So I've had a meeting with the NLA and I'm still in shock. Apparently under the current interpretation of the #Trove API terms of use, you cannot access 'content', only 'metadata'. This means, for example, it is a breach of the terms of use to download the text of a newspaper article using the API. If you want to do this you have to get the NLA's permission beforehand. This is despite the fact that the text is actually in the API responses. WTF?! #GLAM
