I’m a historian and hacker who researches the possibilities and politics of digital cultural collections.

My main project at the moment is the #GLAMWorkbench, which brings together many examples, tools, code and tutorials to help people explore the digital collections of galleries, libraries, archives, and museums.

Saw an article today about the Virtual War Memorial and remembered that way back in 2008 at the National Archives we hacked together Google Maps and Tumblr to enable people to upload images and stories about WWI service people. In the 6 months following the site's launch there were more than 1,000 of these 'scrapbook' posts.

The NAA later rebuilt the site, and a couple of years ago they completely removed it. You can find bits on the Internet Archive & Trove, but I don't know how many of the posts were saved...

I wrote about creating the site here: https://discontents.com.au/local-heroes/index.html #GLAM #archives #crowdSourcing

Oh yeah, with all the Trove nonsense in the last few months, the idea of submitting the GLAM Workbench for the Eureka Prize for research software flew out the window...

Have fun this weekend with a little citizen science, join the city nature challenge!
If you observe any flora/fauna that's *not* a human/dog/cat, upload your pic to iNaturalist, ID it, and help ID other pics:

(It's fun! It's basically my only hobby right now, lol)

The number of vicious insults and outright lies in this “statement” is mind-boggling. https://www.neh.gov/news/update-neh-funding-priorities-and-agencys-recent-implementation-trump-administration-executive

Managed to get a picture of a native bee visiting our backyard – identified as *Callomelitta picta* thanks to iNaturalist: https://inaturalist.ala.org.au/observations/271370956 #bees

Utter confusion exists among the historians

TIL that I ❤️ the Crab Museum: 'There are no binaries in nature, and biology, like all sciences, should never be taken for granted or assumed to be "self-explanatory". Even worse, it should never be used to justify weaponised culture war issues. This ruling is an abuse of science.

...there is immense variation between individuals within a biological sex. Biological sex itself (not just gender) is a spectrum – and it really shouldn't be a big deal.'
