A while ago there was a #bikenite question about favorite #biking books. Right now I'm enjoying Hell On Two Wheels by Amy Snyder. It's about the 2009 Race Across America (RAAM) ultradistance #cycling race.
Snyder goes into some detail of the background and history of the race, and mentioned that the ABC show Wide World of Sports did an episode about the very first RAAM in 1981, and that it won an Emmy!
So I went to see if I could watch it anywhere, and hooray it's on youtube! This link is to segment 1 of 3, the others shouldn't be hard to find.
Watch for the #vintage cycling gear and background visuals (cars, fashion, etc) the excellent editing, and genuinely entertaining moments. No one had done anything quite like this race before, and there is a lot of unscripted chaos and last minute decision making.

"The world's longest skating rink in Canada's capital city of Ottawa will not open this season for the first time in its history.
Ottawa's iconic Rideau Canal has doubled as a 7.8km-long (4.8 miles) outdoor skateway in the winter months for the last 52 years.
But an unusually mild winter this year has melted hopes of fun on the ice.
On Friday, officials said it will not be possible to open the canal to skaters."

“Her 1,000-mile record of 3 days and 1 hour stood for 48 years: her time of 20h 11m 35s between London and Edinburgh, which she set in 1954, is one of her five records that have never been broken.”
These records are astounding. What an incredible person she was.
Today, Britain’s elite cyclists are highly-paid celebrities. It was very different back in 1950s, when Eileen Sheridan dominated the sport – and doing it the hard way. She’s only four-foot-eleven, but Eileen Sheridan is a giant in British women’s cycling. Yet, despite her formidable palmares, she’s almost unknown outside the sport – and not that […]
