Brother (Strength)For people interested in this stuff, it's also worth reading about the occasions on which "white people" (quotes since these ethnic categorisations make absolutely no genetic or cultural sense and mean literally nothing at all, but their spooks haunt us still) have tried to get "black people" in the heartlands of Voodoo practice to teach them how it works, why, what it represents etc.
Like a lot of ethnocentric spiritual systems, it's defended fiercely against outsiders. Jung hit the same barriers when attempting to get Native American leaders to speak to him about their faiths in the 1920s/30s.
But Voodoo is a super interesting case because it could be argued that the obfuscation of its workings are precisely *why* it works.
