Mostly read and boost others. Supporter of many causes. In pursuit of a more just world for all, and keeping this one a viable home. Lover of creativity in any form.

Addicted to #puzzles & #podcasts (mostly #history, #politics, #equality, #science & #technology but by no means exclusively).

Twitter refugee (@baftaii) uninstalled app, account abandoned. Will NOT follow links to Twitter in toots.

#Australian. Frequently lost in the minutiae of other countries politics.

Oops! I did it again:

I created a Twitter account pretending to be Senator Ed Markey (with his permission) and applied for Blue “verification.”

And once again, Twitter took my $8, asked zero questions and gave the fake account a blue checkmark.

Twitter said it fixed ‘verification.’ So I impersonated a senator (again).

Elon Musk said Twitter would begin authenticating users who pay $8 for Blue. Our tech columnist was still able to get a checkmark for an impostor Sen. Ed Markey.

Another Black man falsely accused of a crime and arrested because of a bad facial recognition search. Fourth or so we know about; probably many more we don't. Arrested while driving to a family Thanksgiving and kept in jail for 7 days, even though he'd never been in the same state as the crime scene

JPSO used facial recognition technology to arrest a man. The tech was wrong.

Technology has given police vast reach to compare the faces of criminal suspects against a trove of mug shots, driver’s licenses, and even selfies plucked from social media.

Set #ICE (In Case of #Emergency) details that can be accessed from your phone #lockscreen.

Android, iPhone, and an option when neither suits.

I know it's old-ish, but I recently found someone important to me who didn't have this kind of info available, and it's a fairly comprehensive article.

Exactly 14 years ago , Satoshi Nakamoto designed the most pathetic / inefficient system ever invented by humankind : the blockchain.

Today, it weights 60 000 tons, wastes constantly 10 gigawatts (more than Belgium or Chile) to process less than 7 transactions per second :

Less than a 33 bps modem from 1990.

This could be a joke if it didn't have such gigantic environmental impact, wasn't enabling billion dollars ransomware industry and was not crushing thousands of lives in the process.

I'm more or less part of the fediverse since 2017, but I still can't get over the fact that you people are describing images, very often making me almost content with not being able to see them at all. I've never seen so many people taking time to write meaningful descriptions on this level anywhere else.

It really, really means a lot! Thank you for making it awesome for everyone! Keep 'em coming! ☺️

Now, the reason for this discrepancy is probably that Elon QT'd it to his 122.7M followers.

However, if I were another auto manufacturer, being able to see these numbers directly, which I now have access to thanks to this Views feature, would basically ensure I would spend zero dollars on ad spend with Twitter.

People can debate whether Mastodon has reached "critical mass" or not but it just reached the point for me where I close my Mastodon tab and when presented with a blank screen instinctively just open a new Mastodon tab without even thinking about it.

He talked about electric cars. I don't know anything about cars, so when people said he was a genius I figured he must be a genius.

Then he talked about rockets. I don't know anything about rockets, so when people said he was a genius I figured he must be a genius.

Now he talks about software. I happen to know a lot about software & Elon Musk is saying the stupidest shit I've ever heard anyone say, so when people say he's a genius I figure I should stay the hell away from his cars and rockets.
