On July 1, I’m starting as the Director of Engineering & Physical Sciences at the Ellison Institute of Transformative Medicine. This is a unique opportunity to work within a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment making a real-world impact on a global disease. I will also be continuing my USC Viterbi (faculty) position & my entire USC team will move with me to the Institute where we will contribute to the advancement of cancer prevention, detection, & treatment.

Very excited to co-lead this (free!) Career Workshop with Goldie Goldstein at SPIE Photonics West! This workshop is response to the 2022 SPIE Industry Survey.

Join us and learn how to critically analyze your own strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats in your career and in your personal life, and how to use this analysis for your success!

SPIE Photonics West Special Event Survey Says These Skills Are Missing in Today's Workforce: A Workshop on Essential Career Skills Part B

Along w/ my co-chair Goldie Goldstein, we just finished preparing slides & handouts for this career workshop at PhotonicsWest. Crossing fingers that students & ECRs attend & find it useful!! #career #phd #advice #engineering

As a reminder, the "Q&A" time of a conference presentation is for Q's and A's, not comments.

Excited to be joining in this forward thinking event from NIH!! Looking forward to contributing to the flurry of white papers that will direct future research strategy!

Happy #WhiskersWedneday from daredevil Charlie!

(And yes, the border collie does share her kibble with Charlie.)

I posted yesterday about the importance of HS researchers. Personally, I've found they play a critical role in maintaining the mental health & innovation in my group: 1) They question "why" we do something. They don't accept "it's always been done". This also means that they think outside the box more readily. 2) They are excited to be there. This attitude/enthusiasm is simply contagious to me & the rest of the group. Yes, I agree they require close supervision, but they also give back a lot.

Did you learn how to use an ellipsometer or an optical power meter or Origin or an Instron as an undergrad? I definitely didn't, and these are the skills that are being used.

#mentoring matters and is never a waste of time. And everyone can contribute to #technology innovation in #science and #engineering.

A rant.
Every summer, I accept one HS student researcher (paid). W/o fail, (many) people make comments about how the student must be a waste of my time.

When I point out specific things that the student accomplished, they say "their parents probably did it".

When I say "not possible" (parents don't have ability), they come back w/ "eh, they probably hired someone".

Why is it so hard to believe that a HS student could contribute to experimental research?

I realize this is a little late, but...

Happy New Year to everyone!!!

(And here's hoping that Reviewer 2's heart finally grows - or, at least, they become more considerate.)
