Happy to announce I got a remote gig with neoplants.com!!!! Off to Paris for a 2 week meet and greet and proper onboarding. More details later, including career opportunities for academics/PhDs looking to shift to industry. So excited to work with Pothos!!!
Found a really nice #opamp to design my #UVC detector for my #bespoke #FPLC project. It has really low input bias current and offset #voltage. It's a bit slow with a slew rate of about 0.35v/us (would take about 14 #microseconds to rise from 0 to 5v) but, for my needs, this is perfect. Also found a better #UVC detector that has high sensitivity around 280nm. Time to draft a #transimpedence amplifier #circuit #PCB!

I wrote up today's findings in my research blog. Made a simple desalting column out of parts from McMaster which looks promising. All parts are hotlinked in the post so feel free to try your hand as well. Lots of room for improvement. Enjoy!

Made a simple #breakout #PCB for the #UVC #led I found on Amazon, with ample room to add #filtering #circuitry and #current limiters later. The part is way too small to hand solder without experience so a cheap #PCBWay breakout is in order. Arriving Monday. Gotta love a quiet evening #tinkering :)
Started my first round of Chenopodium album in the exact sand I found it growing in at the beach. Washed, sifted, and flooded with InstantOcean artificial seawater at same salinity. If these germinate, this is gonna be fun!

Conductivity module prototype for my crappy bespoke FPLC coming along nicely...

Fused silica tubing for UV detector of my crappy bespoke FPLC. Gonna wait for silicone to set, add another coat to reinforce the connection, and then 3D print a holder for the UVC sensor and 280nm LED. Gonna make a constant current driver later...

Spent my lunch break grabbing some sand from near one of these salt-growing Lamb's Quarters (Chenopodium album) and will begin a backburner long-term project adapting these to higher and higher salt. The whole plant is edible and a close cousin to quinoa. Underrated weed ripe for some science :)

To-Do:
Cas9 cut of oxalic acid pathway
Bigger grains
Higher salt tolerance
Dwarf phenotypes

Silica tubes arriving today!!! Gonna make a crappy UV protein detector for my bespoke FPLC :)
So really finding Chenopodium album an interesting underrated edible weed. A fun project could be to knockout the oxalic acid pathway via CRISPR so it can be even more edible since oxalates are bad at high doses. Thousands of seeds per plant and hearty in marine env too!
