Me: “I am also not a domestic cat, and if I see you abusing one of those I’ll kick your ass too.”

Things that people don't like about me, now that we live in a world of absolute certainties and tribalism:

1) I don't generalise. For example, not all conservatives are fascists. Not all socialists are tankies.

2) I try to assume positive intent. It's very rare that people act out of genuine malice, but it is too easy to assume so.

3) I don't hold grudges. I might not forget, and I will certainly be less trusting in the future, but I'm not going to go out of my way to harm someone who caused me harm.

4) I give everyone a chance, usually more than one.

The result of all this? My friendships cross boundaries between social groups, political affiliation and social exclusion. This has made some people uncomfortable, and I have lost friends for refusing to take sides in disputes, but overall I'm happier because the friendships that I do have feel more real, and aren't conditional on whatever the current drama of the week is.
