Do you remember Boaty McBoatface?
So the UK Met Office is inviting people to suggest up to 5 names for storms. And apparently lots of people have been suggesting "Storm Bigoil", along with BP, Equinor, Exxon & Shell... This is obviously appalling & definitely not to be emulated via this link:

https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/forms/name-our-storms-call-for-names

Name our Storms

Met Office
@MarkHoltom I do hope they choose "Storm Carbon Capture is a fraud"
@piglet @MarkHoltom
Suggested
Donald, Nigel, Kemi, CEO and Stocks.

@MarkHoltom

Once they’ve closed it, an FOI will be in order to see all the suggestions as I bet they won’t just publish them.

@MarkHoltom "Saudi Aramco has flooded our basement!" — "Rainwater or fossil fuel?"

@MarkHoltom Thank you for highlighting this. I have suggested the names of people who are very actively involved on generating storms:

Ridley
Monckton
Lawson
Farage
Blair

@_Colin_Watson @MarkHoltom Amodei
Altman
Huang
Musk
Nadella
Zuckerberg
@MarkHoltom @jankmammal We all did this last year too. Amusing. They always ignore ‘political’ suggestions though.
@m0rpk @MarkHoltom @jankmammal Storm BP - reason:“a national treasure”.
@MarkHoltom Well, the MetOffice have asked for it : “ Is your grandma a force of nature? Does your best friend cause an impact wherever they go? Now you can give them the recognition they deserve, by naming a storm after them.” “Impact”… yeah, Dave or Amy don’t really hit the mark, do they?
It would be terrible if ppl were to suggest the first names of the ceo’s of those companies. @MarkHoltom

@BenAveling @MarkHoltom

or those of any board level managers you can find, and this has way more of a chance of being accepted than obvious "protest" names..

@MarkHoltom Done. Thanks for sharing.
@MarkHoltom storm 'Private Jet' coming at you 🙂

@Niall @MarkHoltom

I suggested:
Storm the Boardrooms
Storm the Private Clubs
Storm the Executive Airports
Storm the Luxury Yachts
Storm the Exclusive Resorts

with the rationale:
The super rich have been resisting aggressive measures for combating climate change for decades, mostly because they feel they have more to lose preventing climate change than enduring the changes such as serious storms.

These mild names might remind the super rich that they might not live long enough to endure climate change.

@grumble209 @Niall @MarkHoltom
Don't forget the carbon industries and the AI demanding large data centres taking water from agriculture, towns and cities

@MarkHoltom @MurmeltHier Here’s a link with the most polluting companies in the world, in case someone needs inspiration

https://www.thecorporategovernanceinstitute.com/insights/news-analysis/the-20-most-polluting-companies-in-the-world-esg/

The 20 most polluting companies in the world | Corporate Governance | CGI

The 20 most polluting companies in the world are all in the fossil fuel industry and contribute 35% of all carbon dioxide worldwide.

@MarkHoltom I've just gone with BigOil. We do what we can to make our point!
@MarkHoltom it also asked if they could publicise the reason. Of course you can, if you dare...
@MarkHoltom Totally didn’t use Shell, BP, Equinor, Total and Mobil, and totally didn’t give ”human-caused climate change by consumption of fossil fuels” as the reason!

@MarkHoltom
We need to give credit where it's due: the people who have worked so hard over the decades to generate these heatwaves should be recognised.

#ClimateChange
#Heatwave
#CooWhatAScorcher

@MarkHoltom they're obviously not going to use these suggestions, all this does is annoy the employees working on this project

@wheresalice @MarkHoltom

The staff at the met office, of all places, are very well placed to understand the effects of global warming.

I personally think, with this contest, they know exactly what they're doing.

Go and fill this form guilt free!

@MarkHoltom How about Storm Sharon as she seems to be dedicated to accelerating climate change and making it worse…

@MarkHoltom

Storm Trooper
Storm WorseThanEver
Storm NextOneWillBeWorse

@MarkHoltom Chevron, Valero and Suncor can round the lot.
@MarkHoltom Exxon is a slightly odd choice, given that their main brand in the UK is Esso.
@MarkHoltom
I'm pretty sure they accept first names only, and take each top voted one for each letter in the alphabet, no?

@MarkHoltom Here are my suggestions for #StormNames.
Storm: LandDumpRot
Storm: MadPlodRunt
Storm: DampLordNut
Storm: RantOddLump
Storm: NapMoldTurd

Don't you just love anagrams?

@MarkHoltom wonder how many times Stormy McStormface has been suggested... 😂
Name a Storm - Met Éireann - The Irish Meteorological Service

Met Éireann, the Irish National Meteorological Service, is the leading provider of weather information and related services for Ireland.

@MarkHoltom Thanks for sharing. Lots of oil company names to suggest!

@MarkHoltom

Just submitted some suggestions for storm names.

reason

citizens suffer the cost of a climate being destroyed for profits.

@MarkHoltom ah yes 2016, the year the contrarian British publicwere asked to vote and choose to wind up the establishment. Thank goodness that in all such situations wiser heads prevailed and sought a common sense compromise.
@MarkHoltom Duly not emulated. Like at all.
@MarkHoltom may you suggest hell's shell for me? thanks

@MarkHoltom

I definitely have not boosted this toot. Noooooo ...

@MarkHoltom We should do this for heatwaves as well: give them names and assign blame where it belongs. "This heatwave was brought to you by BP, who tried to shove the blame onto you".
@MarkHoltom I went with
Storm Rosebank
Storm Jackdaw
Storm Heathrow
Storm Exxon
Storm Shell
@MarkHoltom Deepwater Horizon is a very apt name for a storm.

@MarkHoltom
Darren
Masoud
Alexey
Amin

First names of CEOs of top oil firms - ExxonMobil, National Iranian Oil Co, Gazprom, and Aramco, who have personally lobbied against climate action or under whose leadership the companies continued to expand oil extraction. As a result their legacy can be directly attributed to elevated risk of destruction caused by more powerful storms affecting the UK.

This also fits the naming convention already employed of using common names

@MarkHoltom
What a lovely idea, credit where credit is due!

@Numerfolt @MarkHoltom

I went that route but more cryptically, Shelly instead of Shell etc 🙂

@MarkHoltom We need to tell the Met Office we need names for Heatwaves, say any temperatures expected to be 5 to 10 degrees C above the seasonal (or monthly) average for location, and possibly other names for those 10 to 15 degrees above the seasonal (or monthly) average!
Not just the Met office figures from above 25C to 28C (dependent on location in UK)
