This dataviz is just amazing https://visquill.com/gallery/uk-a1

@neocarto

That is a ton of information in directly accessible form.

Congrats to all .involved.

@neocarto daaaaamn that interactive infographic is amazing!!!
@neocarto I ssid them A1 driverless cars weren't gonna work and my son scoffed...
@neocarto wow, yeah, it’s a grim dataset, but *such* a cool visualisation 😎
@neocarto
#alt4you Collision density, 2000-24 for the A1 London - Edinburgh. A zoomable map where a curved bar chart appear along the road showing local collision density. In one corner, the time of day can be selected, live-updating the bar chart.
@neocarto All the visualisations in the gallery are interesting, superb find, thanks for sharing!

@neocarto So the Old Rocker is nothing more than a statistic, now?

Up on the A1 by Scotch Corner
just like it used to be.
And as he flies, tears in his eyes, his wind-whipped words echo the final take
and he hits the trunk road doing around 120 with no room left to brake.

@neocarto The visualization is stunning.

@neocarto

I assume the big peak in the north corresponds to the stretch in Norhumberland that is not dualed - and in the south is down to traffic density.

@GeofCox @neocarto Some of the dual-carriageway stretches of the A1 in Scotland & Northumberland are the deadliest. (Recent crash somebody confused and driving on wrong side - three killed). I think it’s the junction design that really matters.
@neocarto Not sure if I got the date selection thing to work right: it looks like 2000-04 has the most collisions?
@neocarto Love this! This is amazing! 😲
P.S. visualization part, not the collisons 🤣
@neocarto Seriously impressive.
Looking at the gallery I'm hypnotised by the rainfall visualisation!

@neocarto

@tb check out the dataviz above!

@tomjennings @neocarto that’s *really* interesting. More and more, I think static dataviz is a dead end — which is funny, because one of the main reasons people treat static models as the norm is Tufte’s fixation on print as the default medium for dataviz.
@neocarto
Absolutely brilliant. ⭐️
You have to have the data first of course, but once you have it this is the way to extend usability for a fraction of value add cost. Totally impressive. Massive congratulations to the team!
🙏🏻😀
@neocarto very impressive work, thanks for sharing. I like the idea to have a „parallel bar chart“ in sync with geo data 👌
@neocarto it’s very very impressive, but I wonder how much the projection changes the data ; for example around Newcastle upon Tyne, the road is at ~ 45° to the "reference polyline", so even if the density were constant, you would see a peak around that, wouldn’t you ?
@ced I'm quite sure those are regularly spaced road distances on the graph, that's also why the "pointer" between the road and the graph is usually a bit slanted when you move the black slider.
@neocarto

@menos oh I see, looks like you’re right; it can be a bit unintuitive
when zoomed in on a very irregular part (like Berwick-upon-Tweed), but all in all this works really well.

@neocarto

@neocarto just sitting here expecting Alfred Hitchcock to walk into that first zoomed out frame a la
