DuckDuckGo
@evacide seniors once again :(
Junior markets seem dead.
@evacide one position in my skillset and it's ai integration.

@kevingranade @evacide

They look to have all some aspect of LLM, unfortunately

@Muddobbers @kevingranade @evacide
Yep, is all non-starter stuff for me 😢
Morally, Ethically & Professionally I cannot submit to the AI,genAI,LLM quack-fest.

@evacide
Senior backend engineer (the kind of thing I would do):
"Implementing AI-assisted answers and integrating them into our Search product"

Not evil? Ha! Hahaha!

@drewph @evacide Yeah, DDG is slimy af. Promoting AI slop and misrepresenting themselves as a search engine rather than a Google+Bing reseller.
@dalias @drewph @evacide "We do not track you. The scammers whose ads we gladly push at you however…"

@toriver @drewph @evacide After Google I'd hoped everyone would have learned. A search engine needs to be saying one of:

1. "We are not a business. We will not be run as a business, and here is how we intend to fund operations without being a business", or

2. "We are a business. Here is the way we make money and here is how we've set that up so that it does not conflict with your interests as a user of the service."

"Um, we're doing exactly like old Google with pinky-promises about 'evil' and no clear legitimate way to make money, and actively partnering with them and Microsoft to repackage their results" does not cut it.

@drewph @evacide

Also in the "About You" setion.

"Familiarity with AI agent tooling: evaluation frameworks, RAG pipelines and prompt engineering"

Wild since they had that whole AI poll where everyone said no AI, and they have lots of no AI options. I expected better from them.

@MongooseStudios @drewph @evacide The most that can be said is it's a lot easier to opt out of the AI stuff.

@ariaflame @MongooseStudios @drewph @evacide

Qwant and Startpage do that a lot better !

@drewph @MongooseStudios @evacide

Hey, that does not happen with me and I am literally sitting in a shithole (#Pakistan) but I guess you should use startpage then 🤷‍♂️

@evacide I mean, its paid at least, but having to do two projects for them before you even talk to the team, seems like a strange way to acquire talent...
@evacide TIL DDG is mostly written in Perl

@evacide

"not evil"

*looks at the job description*

it's evil

@teohhanhui @evacide

Implementing AI-assisted answers and integrating them into our Search product while maintaining our privacy-first approach

(And OP blocked me, just for calling "AI" evil.)
@teohhanhui 😖 That's not OK ! That's not even a personal attack or anything like that. My personal issues with DDG is their "censorship policies" regarding "certain kind of content" and sometimes also related to news
@LilPecan Interesting. I did not expect her to vouch for them. I will have to revisit the company’s practices.
@evacide as a daily DDG user I never thought to apply there until now, so thanks for raising awareness
@evacide Their push for "agentic" processes annoys me to no end.
@gettie δεν έχω ιδέα αν έχει κάτι που σου ταιριάζει, αλλά πετάχτηκε μπροστά μου και σκέφτηκα πως ίσως βρεις κάτι εδώ.💗

@evacide

What is their tech stack? Various job descriptions list perl, node.js, python, go, kotlin, c#, swift. Are there any languages they won't use?

I'll have to consider this. Pay is a lot better than what I'm used to, and if I want to work for an American company, DDG is probably better than most.

@evacide "and also not evil". I miss the days when that was not a job requirement.

@grumpydad
And we have to grade the acceptable level of “not evil” that we're willing to apply to :/

@evacide

@evacide
Have you not looked at what DuckDuckGo has been doing lately, or is everything you say so unreliable? The positions involve AI, and then there's this gem:
@evacide It ain’t Google, but “not evil”? Not so fast.

@evacide Not evil? Then this seems like a good time to remind people that duckduckgo:

1. Is building planet-roasting, de-skilling AI

2. Is lying about censoring adult-oriented results

DDG's no google, but they're just another shitty tech company in my book.

@pip ty I have been feeling bad about dumping them. trying to ween off google but the two started fighting moving shit back and forth duck had to go.
@pip @evacide what is the alternative? It seems like you can't be too purist when we're in a capitalist system which by design requires selling ones soul to exist. Sometimes the slightly less shit thing is as good as can be done in the moment, right?

@Torithom @evacide Yeah imo there are no good search engines at the moment. But personally, I prefer Startpage over the rest for a few reasons:

1. Haven't caught them in weird lies like DDG.

2. Startpage doesn't seem to be building AI shit.

3. They're not based in the US.

But, Startpage doesn't have their own search index, and pulls a lot of data from Google on the backend.

Soo, hard agree that you can't be too purist about these things bc we gotta search somehow. But we also don't have to go work for companies building AI either.

@evacide I'm looking for a role where i can code free software, play factorio and drink as much tea as I want
@evacide
If only I had literally any skills good companies want 😅
@evacide I wouldn't know what to do if the company wasn't evil.
@evacide “…and Not evil” made me laugh out loud! 😂
@evacide how can it be not evil and full steam on ai ? Real question.
@evacide "By submitting an application, you acknowledge and consent to the use of AI technology in our review process."
If not evil, why evil shaped ?
@evacide Not evil would be a lie in this case. #lang_en
@evacide The fact that you're calling this "not evil" when the first position I look at touts AI integration is a serious red flag for not just your own values, but those of anyone who empowers you to lead others. I see you have a director position at the EFF, which I had previously thought highly of. I may be an insignificant drop in the bucket, but this post has me canceling my recurring contribution to that organization.
@evacide How is accelerating the climate crisis with AI "not evil"?
