Here's a simple test:
If you can't read a post about hate speech and attacks on people shopping at a supermarket without talking about it in terms of politics, either domestic politics or about a country thousands of kilometers away, you're being antisemitic.
Another test is the "contextualization test" made famous by scholar Dara Horn. If you can't have a story about Jews being assaulted or attacked without talking about some "context" that "explains" it, you're being antisemitic.
You responded to an article about hate crimes with "But Israel...." - no. It's not Israel's fault that there is hate against Jews in Germany. It's not Netanyahu's fault. It's not anyone's fault but the ones who throw rocks at Jews, or yell at Jews in supermarkets, or put up signs saying "No Jews welcome" at their cafes.
And it's now twice that when presented with this, you make it about some foreign government.
You said it's too narrow a definition if you'd be caught up in it? I think that my definition is just right...
@serge @tazgetroete 1/2 No. Criticizing a government is not the same as hating a people. By that logic, criticizing Putin would be anti-Russian, criticizing Trump would be anti-American, and criticizing the Iranian regime would be anti-Muslim.
Jews are not responsible for the actions of the Israeli government, just as Christians are not responsible for the actions of every Christian politician.
Antisemitism is hatred of Jews because they are Jews. Criticism of a government because of its policies is something entirely different.
@serge @tazgetroete 2/2 Conflating the two does not protect Jews. It weakens the fight against real antisemitism by turning a serious accusation into a political shield.
Fight antisemitism. Fight racism. Fight authoritarianism. But do not confuse a government with an entire people.
