#wsocial was announcing a top-down approach to get their #network working & they are doing it

In the #Blick article #AnnaZeiter explains why #AliceWeidel & other #Nazis are welcome to her #socialmedia #platform https://www.blick.ch/digital/anna-zeiter-bringt-twitter-alternative-w-social-auch-alice-weidel-ist-willkommen-id22026157.html

wSocial tries to become a new #Tech #empire by pulling on their personal networks & riding the problematic term of #European #Sovereignty

#Lobbying the #rich & #powerful seems to pay out in the #EuropeanUnion ¯\(°_o)/¯

@Katika A part of me is wondering why they need to build yet another closed garden instead of joining the Fediverse. On the other hand, we do perfectly fine without them. It's just gonna be another BlueSky, but run by European sycophants to the rich and powerful rather than US ones. Different lipstick, same pig.

@gilgwath
Because above all they want to make money. Unfortunately it seems to be as simple as that.

Having verified people and potentially selling their information helps with that.

Absolutely!
@gilgwath And yes! @_elena work is great and I will keep on boosting it :)

@gilgwath
Well #Foss & #Fediverse are just no money spinners...

#wsocial & Co seem to be up for #data, #money & #influence

#decentral #networks are important #social #infrastructure but no good #playground for #tech #oligarchy

And not as perfect to pitch as an " #ai " training ground...

@gilgwath Because the Fediverse doesn't require your ID. W is built expressly for the purpose of surveillance when people have to provide their ID.

@[email protected] @[email protected] The social network W is presumably named after the 1920 novel "We". "We" basically founded the dystopia genre and predates even 1984 and Brave New World, and is said to have influenced both. "W" requires you to provide your ID and "We" is all about a panopticon. The CEO of W wore a red "Make Europe Great Again" cap, which can only be read as dogwhistle for European fascism. Now they say they wouldn't have problems hosting even Alice Weidel. That entire network and its CEO are toxic as hell, from the beginning and its introduction at Davos. It checks out that Ursula von der Leyen and other members of the EU already created their accounts there when they don't give a fuck about Mastodon. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/We_(novel)
