Who Profits from Fear? Unpacking the Ebola Coverage
The Ebola outbreak has dominated headlines across every major news network. Reports flood our screens with alarming statistics, grave warnings, and images designed to evoke fear. If you have followed my work for some time, you already understand what drives this relentless coverage.
However, if you are new to these ideas and have stumbled upon this article, allow me to explain the underlying mechanism in straightforward terms.
The core issue comes down to a simple question: who benefits when people are afraid?
When a health crisis captures public attention, vast sums of money flow toward organizations and individuals positioned to respond. Pharmaceutical companies secure government contracts. International health agencies receive increased funding. Private donors open their wallets. The more alarming the crisis appears, the greater the financial response. This creates a troubling incentive structure where those with resources can influence how threats are perceived and, consequently, how money flows in response.
Wealthy donors, such as Bill Gates, provide significant funding to global health organizations like the World Health Organization. This financial support raises important questions about the relationship between money and influence. Global health organizations have priorities beyond public health. During the COVID-19 pandemic, for example, the rapid development and distribution of vaccines, created profits not only through direct sales but also through treatments for side effects. Keeping people alarmed benefits those who profit from the solutions they offer.
This pattern goes beyond individual crises or global health organizations. The way wealth and power are structured creates a self-reinforcing cycle. Tax policies allow charitable donations to lower tax bills, letting donors influence institutional priorities. Those with wealth can use their power to push for policies that benefit them, a practice known as lobbying. The money saved from taxes goes back into gaining political and personal influence, leading to more financial gain. This is circular reasoning: wealth buys influence, influence protects wealth, and the cycle goes on.
Breaking this pattern needs shared awareness and support. Knowing how these systems work is the first step to changing them. Sharing information that reveals these connections helps others see patterns they might overlook. Supporting independent voices that challenge established views allows for scrutiny that powerful institutions often resist.
This brings me to a personal appeal. If you want to break this horrendous circle, you must support people like me.
