I note that Elon Musk's wealth now exceeds the annual GDP of Switzerland.

I think this makes him a state-level actor, and a *hostile* one.

I submit that we have tools for dealing with rogue states, and they should be applied to him until/unless he starts to behave. NB: said tools vary from polite talkings-to by diplomats all the way up to cruise missile strikes and invasions.

@cstross Perhaps he thinks he is General Zod, the outer space villian from superman comics.

@timo21 @cstross He's more like Lex Luthor. But then so are Trump and Bezos. And heck, the same actor has played both Zuck and Lex in two movies.

Wait, they're all Lex Luthor? πŸ‘¨β€πŸš€πŸŒŽ

@kelson @timo21 @cstross

People, he is The Space Fuhrer. There is no doubt about this.

@glitzersachen @kelson @cstross with a giant helmet like in space balls.

They are all The Mekon.

@cstross might enjoy the bit of #UKPolitics trivia that both Jeffrey Archer and Angus Maude were nicknamed 'The Mekon'.

@cstross a state-level actor with a high-profile usable-as-ICBM capability...

@cstross

Okay but seriously... what happens to his empire if (say) a SpaceX rocket crashes into his Tesla, killing him instantly?

He's got what, 14 kids?

What is his line of succession?

@ralfmaximus @cstross When the spell is broken, and the price/earnings ratio of his companies drops to 20-something, the bubble bursts.
@ralfmaximus @cstross
The Bolsheviks had a solution for that problem, too.
@cstross
Musk's wealth doesn't exceed the annual GDP of Switzerland: because the latter is a real (if imperfect) accounting of economic activity, whereas the former is merely a completely imaginary artifact of "mark-to-market". I may be worrying too much over something that's not so big a deal, but it seems to me like we keep seeing more and more valuations for things that appear to be completely untethered from whatever shared reality we have left πŸ˜›

@eigen I know that; but nevertheless, Musk is too "rich" to be allowed off the leash. Like it or not he clearly has state-level leverage and isn't shy about ratfucking eg. British politics by putting a finger on the social media scales for the racist right. He needs to be reined in, and hardβ€”and threats that would work on a normal citizen are inadequate.

We need to reintroduce him to "Ultima Ratio Regum".

@cstross @eigen Yeah and it's not imaginary as he borrows *real* money using that stock as collateral, and then spends that money on shitty things, like far right support. And since it's a loan, he doesn't pay taxes on that money. The power that the stock allows is all too real.

@virtualbri @cstross @eigen I’ve said for years that using an asset as collateral should count as realizing any gains on that asset and trigger capital gains tax as if it were sold at the collateral valuation.

Closing that loophole in capital gains tax would have cut him off at the knees a long time ago.

@cstross I definitely agree with you here, but I'm curious: is Musk the top priority because of his new bigger imaginary number? or because of his social-media reach (which he already had last week)?

I definitely don't think Musk is the only one that needs to be corralled; but should e.g. Peter Thiel be higher on the list?

@eigen My top 5 "little list of those who won't be missed" (social media bad actors in the large) definitely includes: Musk, Thiel, Zuckerberg, Trump (hint: Truth Social) and V. Putin (who ffectively controls a huge propaganda machine targeting the west).
@cstross @eigen doesn't the Oracle guy control large part of TikTok now? In case you would want to expand the list.
@viq @cstross @eigen oracle guy controls A LOT of shit
Inside Larry Ellison's Surveillance Empire: Oracle's Invisible Panopticon

An investigation reveals how Oracle founder Larry Ellison has quietly assembled one of the world's most comprehensive surveillance infrastructures through government contracts, healthcare systems, and law enforcement integrations - a data empire operating largely out of public view.

NewsHub
@viq @eigen Yes, but I suspect Larry has bet too hard on the data centre boom and when the bubble bursts Oracle is going to go down hard. In fact, it might be the first non core-AI multinational to go bankrupt.

@cstross @eigen here's an old essay i like a lot on the subject of holding tyrants personally accountable. It is from 2013 so predates all... hand waves... this... but I find the argument persuasive.

@cstross @eigen Not even a fan of Musk but I am so glad you have no say over here. Talking about going to war with an individual citizen and keeping them leashed? Yikes. And saying "abolish the monarchy" on your page while exhibiting extremely controlling king-like behavior is incredibly ironic. If we gave you a say, where would it even end? No thanks.

@ZeroTrustWraith @cstross @eigen

Billionaires are evil human beings who should be reined by every government on earth. They should not be allowed to exist. They should have their wealth taken and returned to the people, either directly or through government services. They should be rendered "mere" millionaires.

That's not a controversial take; that's logical humanism.

Any calls for missile strikes are currently hyperbole (although American citizens have been drone striked for far less) but the broligarchs' crime spree is ongoing and escalating.

A trillionaire is an abomination, a human kaiju, whose destruction is measured in hundreds of thousands of deaths (so far). He should be treated as such.

@jrdepriest @cstross @eigen Ignorance is bliss. He's sitting on maybe $1 to $3 billion in actual liquid cash. The rest of his $1.1 trillion net worth is entirely on paper, consisting of the valuation of his businesses and their critical infrastructure, stock options, etc. His businesses also happen to sustain hundreds of thousands of jobs.

As stated previously, I don't even care for Elon Musk and some of the things he has said are extremely distasteful and arguably very bigoted. However, your views completely lack any nuance whatsoever. Immediately targeting people just because of their net worth is not something I can get on board with. Someone's net worth isn't necessarily a reflection of their character.

Who will be the first to acquire nuclear weapons: Musk or Thiel?

@anon20394702398750 @cstross

Thiel. He's shown some competence in the past and he's worried about the "Anti-Christ" so he'll probably think a nuke for Jesus will make everything all right.

@cstross invasion and missiles are not considered tools of international politics in civilized countries. Unlike governments Elon Musk is actually accountable to regular courts. Simply tax him and put him in front of a jury. No additional tools required, he is no different from the rest of us.

@cstross We genuinely need more security minded people in economics and politics, the stability of markets and the world depends on it.

@cstross ... how likely do you think we are to get Kim Stanley-Robinson-style "meta-nationals" as discussed in the Mars trilogy? when I read that first I thought they sounded fairly inevitable ...
@cstross at least when we say we'll put a fast train in a long tube, we actually do it and it works.
@cstross I suggest we start with the latter tools and work our way back if needed.
@alice @cstross there would be a certain poetry to it if we could start with drone strikes...

@cstross guillotines work with this problem.

@nosfe

Historically, guillotines have turned on the poor; on people who happened to be related to or employed by the targets of the guillotine-wielders; on the people who did not share the exact ideology of those who won power; and then in full circle on the people who enthusiastically called for and employed the guillotine.
