Hi @bjoernsta and @michael , I've noticed that https://european.social is hosted entirely by 🇺🇸 providers, i.e. GoDaddy as domain registrar, Amazon for DNS and web hosting, and Google for fonts.

Check:

- https://hosting-checker.net/websites/european.social

Wouldn’t it be more appropriate to lead by example and host this initiative with 🇪🇺 providers?

The European Social Stack — An open declaration

@bartknubben @bjoernsta @michael Thanks Bart, those are good resources. Yes, will work through this. We just topped 400 signatures from all over Europe which is great!

@michael

🤨 most marketing answer ever.

"that are wonderful sources you've used to find out we don't mean what we say. but hey! we already have tricked 400 individuals into signing!"

Not that I'm against combining forces to push open standards further in the world. But this whole "Mastodon is for communities, BlueSky for Social Media and Matrix for communications" really feels like someone just put a bunch of services together and now tries to make it a thing.

@michael

Also, from Matrix side I haven't heard anything about european.social. Do they know they are included here?

@bartknubben @bjoernsta

@bartknubben @bjoernsta @michael To follow up, this was done in a hurry to get the website up ahead of the launch on Friday. We recognise it was a mistake and will get things moved over as quickly as we can. Thanks again for raising this - there was a lot of work to get everything ready and we didn’t get this piece right.
@michael @bartknubben @bjoernsta
Isn't this a matter of proper planning? or the lack thereof...

@michael @bartknubben @bjoernsta @sturmsucht

It's too bad I was shown european.social only the morning of your launch; I would have loved the opportunity to offer advice about the best ways to host it, making sure all the resources were based in Europe.

Good thing is, a move would be easy and swift. For domain name registrars, I recommend IONOS (Germany) or Hostinger (Lithuania). For managed Ghost hosting there's Magic Pages (Austria); they use Bunny as CDN (Slovenia): https://www.magicpages.co/

@_elena @michael @bartknubben @bjoernsta @sturmsucht That’s really helpful thank you :) We’ll get everything moved as soon as we can

@michael I've used all these tools for years and I can really vouch for them - from first hand experience ❤️

@_elena @michael @bartknubben @bjoernsta @sturmsucht Amazing! This is part of my own journey away from Big Tech. Watch this space!

@michael I absolutely LOVE this website and I've been using it as a guide; you'd really appreciate it Michael:

@_elena @michael @bartknubben @bjoernsta @sturmsucht Wow thank you will check it out ❤️

@michael besides the tips from @_elena there are lots of people & organizations that are able to offer assistance. Please reach out next time so mistakes like hosting on AWS can be prevented. Happy to hear that you're working on fixing it. Thanks!

@bartknubben @bjoernsta @sturmsucht

@BjornW @michael @_elena @bartknubben @bjoernsta @sturmsucht @michael Thanks all for your advice. The site has been rebuilt from the ground up and moved to European infrastructure: hosting went from AWS to Ossrox, a German provider. It now runs on Kirby, a German CMS. Fonts are self-hosted instead of loaded from Google. The site makes no third-party requests at all. The domain will soon be transferred from GoDaddy.

In the process, we also made lots of improvements for accessibility: proper focus outlines for keyboard navigation, an improved HTML structure, and alt texts for images and graphics. There's more to do, of course. If you notice any issues, please let us know.

@michael
Excellent news!!! Thanks for your speedy action!

@BjornW @_elena @bjoernsta @sturmsucht

Nice.
@ossrox is a great hoster.

@[email protected] Awesome! Great that you took the opportunity to fix some accessibility issues as well while rebuilding. Do share your experiences so others may learn from it as well :)

EU🇪🇺: We gonna decouple from USA🇺🇸 MS Excel and start using open source Libreoffice Calc and Gnumeric.

Libreoffice Calc and Gnumeric: hold our beers🍺...

This is the same file opened in both:

#dataloss #untrustworhy #treacherous #opensource #unreliable #contempt #unusable #failure #eu #us #usa #excel #localc #libreoffice #libreofficecalc #gnumeric #spreadsheet #corruption #naive

@clock

And?
We should not decouple because of bugs?

Comparing usage of a single program (MS Excel) with the usage of two programs handling the same file differently is a weird comparison.

@_elena @michael @bartknubben @bjoernsta

@_elena @michael @bartknubben @bjoernsta @sturmsucht I was looking why I could not find the Bunny CDN on their website, and then I read it in the latest blog article:

> Magic Pages is moving from Bunny.net to Cloudflare for CDN and security.

That's an unfortunate decision :(

Thank you for the tag, replied to the original comment :)
The decision itself wasn't easy, but I have spent countless hours on video calls and in emails with Bunny and other European alternatives.

The conclusion was simply that none of the could (or wanted?) to offer pricing that made sense.

Some background on how I think about all of this here: https://www.magicpages.co/blog/on-cloudflare-ethics-and-european-sovereignty/
On Cloudflare, Ethics, and European Sovereignty

Since announcing the move from Bunny.net to Cloudflare, I've received some feedback, both from customers and from the wider community. And I knew it was coming. The concerns fall into two categories: Cloudflare's ethics as a company, and the fact that I'm now routing traffic through a US company.

@bartknubben @bjoernsta @michael would be great, think this would also help to improve the adoption of modern internet standards ➡️ https://internet.nl/site/european.social/4132748/ and https://internet.nl/mail/european.social/1955783/
