Extracted all my audiobooks from Audible and de-DRMed them in about 10 minutes this afternoon. Now I have all the digital book material I ever bought from Amazon in formats I can control.

If this interests you, Calibre and Libation are your go-to projects.

Libation

Libation: Liberate your Library - A free application for downloading your Audible audiobooks

@trib nice
@franksting I may have reached the point where I can delete my Amazon account. If there are things I need for various reasons, I can find them elsewhere.

@trib @franksting

So I'm a bit further along, same process, and got rid of Amazon last year. When the latest Murderbot came out, I got it on Kobo.

Now I need to change it to mp3 so I can add it to the rest in my VLC playlist. Does anybody know how I could do that?

@springdiesel @franksting I would be interested to know what someone should use to read and gather your Kobo titles, especially if they don't have a Kobo device?

Given they have pushed users to their web app - an anti-user move if ever there was one - what's the useful path to controlling those titles?

At some point, they're likely to stop remaining app installations from working, at which point Kobo title owners lose control of their purchased material.

@springdiesel @franksting to your other question, Handbrake is possibly the app to do audio file conversion. It's a video transcoder, but I know it does audio formats as well.

HandBrake: Open Source Video Transcoder

HandBrake is an open-source, GPL-licensed, multiplatform, multithreaded video transcoder.

@trib @franksting

Ooh, I'll look into it. Thanks!

@trib this is very useful information, cheers
@PhilWill <two thumbs up dot gif>
@trib I knew about Calibre, but Libation is new to me. This is very useful information. Thank you!
@trib This interests me very much... thanks for the links!
@trib I tried a lot to "free" my ebooks from the Kindle, unfortunately with no success. I could save only some. Calibre didn't de-DRM ...
@NatureMC @trib I am also stuck with some books on Amazon that I wasn't able to liberate.
@bodhipaksa @NatureMC de-DRM with Calibre can be a bit laborious, but you should be able to get them all to work.
@trib @NatureMC It's downloading the Kindle books that's been tricky.
@bodhipaksa @NatureMC yes. I connected the Kindle as a USB drive and then pulled them from there to a folder on my desktop. Processed them from there.
@trib Do you hsve a good How To? I tried every recipe I found on the internet, nothing worked. Seems to be thst newer Kindle uodates are protected against Calibre.
@bodhipaksa
@trib libation is the way to go ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ™‚
@trib I donโ€™t do audiobooks. And I no longer get my ebooks from Amazon. Go Kobo, fuck Bezos! And I get my physical books from Thriftbooks, even tho new is more expensive than Amazon.Again, fuck Bezos!
@trib what app are you using to play them on your mobile device?

@bitterdonald
Not the OP, but allow me to jump in with a recommendation for 'Voice' (if you're on Android).

@trib @maxleibman Bought all mine from Libro.fm already DRM free. Iโ€™ll buy Jeff Bozo shit when hell freezes over.

@trib

Really love this Listen Audiobook player for audio MP3s

Listen Audiobook Player - Apps on Google Play

Feature rich and easy to use player for your audio books.

@trib @FreakyFwoof If you want something less nerdy, I will throw my two cents and recommend Open Audible.

@trib

I wish I knew about this before I deleted my amazon account. Was still worth deleting though

@trib yeah I did that about a year ago - I get audiobooks from many places but I like being able to play them all on a single app. Google books are downloadable too (without having to convert them) if you choose.
@trib How do you chapterify the audio from Audible? Tried it on a book and the splits were rubbish. I used Inaudible.
