1. I’m “blaming” people
2 “yes but we need system change from government”
3. “we need to target billionaires”.

@urlyman I often get this when I suggest we should all fly less (or not at all). People say the government should act, while refusing to change their own lives, and think that using air con will solve all issues. Government needs to see people are willing to change before they'll do anything, and they need to be pressured from all sides. It's worked in the past, so I try not to despair!

It’s now more than a decade since I made the commitment never to fly again, except in an emergency (such as a family crisis). I still keep my passport current, but a significant side effect is that I’ve discovered more of my own country.

I did the same 12 years ago. So, although Latin America fascinates me, I no longer visit.
I have seen more of continental Europe (by train) and more of these islands (by train, and, er, car) too.

@KimSJ @urlyman @ORIOliver we've not flown since '07 that was out last holiday abroad, since then, we've been too strapped to contemplate an expensive holiday. We do however do this instead...clean the home thoroughly, go shop for all the lovely local foods & drinks wed normally have on holiday & simply enjoy them at home. Cheaper, low carbon footprint, support local businesses, no holiday travel stress, win - win!

@Sine_Nomine @KimSJ @urlyman I think we should take personal small actions seriously, as a way to move the dial on climate change policy. But don't want to fall into virtue signalling trap, amongst my own tribe. We also need to push governments hard, with effective campaigning. Since I don't have much faith in Polanski, I do what I can to support Ed Milliband (emails, donations, petitions) ... He does at least seem committed to Net Zero. I bet he flies a lot, though!

It’s a little tricky to get the balance right between “hey, this is what I’ve discovered one can do, and it’s fine, why don’t you try it too” and virtue signalling. On the whole I take the risk, in the hope of triggering more change.
