Dear Fedi friends,

I hereby present you my new favorite website: https://isaiprofitable.com, which tracks the spending and revenue of all the major AI companies.

Oh it is glorious - the perfect link to share with AI-pilled people in your life.

Spoiler alert: there is a NO in big red letters on the homepage. And there's a running tally of the money spent on AI since the page loaded.

@davidgerard you would love it

Is AI Profitable Yet?

@_elena @davidgerard The really depressing thing is thinking what could have been done with 1.4 trillion dollars. That's what people in the future won't believe. "They spent it on chatbots when children were starving and the biosphere was collapsing?!?"
@stib @_elena @davidgerard Money is complete rubbish, anyway. Money hasn't got any intrinsic value, it is just a symbol for value, and its power depends on how much the people believe in it. Ten thousand years ago, money hadn't been invented yet, but some people were already living in the world's first cities.

@LordCaramac @stib @_elena @davidgerard

money creates poverty. there is no poverty in places where there is no money.

@roblosricos @LordCaramac "there is no poverty in places where there is no money" [citation needed]
I think plenty of people starved and had inadequate shelter at times before money was a thing. I think you're confusing money with capitalism.

@stib @LordCaramac

food grows right up from the ground, there are plenty of fish in the water, and all sorts of meaty creatures wandering around. in many countries where there is widespread hunger, the country's main exports are grains - especially sorghum, which goes into dog food. AND fossil-fuel corporations are still producing ethanol - which is made from corn. capitalism is just the latest incarnation of wealth creation. all wealth is created through exploitation, always.

@_elena I love how this is presented where at first glance you read the numbers up top and get the impression that they're half way to profitability until you scroll down and realize that Nvidia is the only company making money and nobody else is even close @davidgerard
@bridget @_elena @davidgerard
But everyone wants to believe they can be NVIDIA soon…
@samy @bridget @_elena @davidgerard they don't understand that nvidia is in a position similar to a gambling house selling tickets. They're the only ones likely to profit

@_elena @bridget @davidgerard

Yes, this was my favourite part, lurking at the bottom…

@_elena @davidgerard why does it matter if it's profitable? (I abhor "AI", BTW)
@hrast lack of profit may convince the general public that it isn’t worth further destroying the environment for

@_elena

Thank you for a consequential followup to https://www.web3isgoinggreat.com

I would have wished for a little bit more cynical name though.

Also, it seems so far that there's only one profiteer in the gravedigger business: the shovel maker.

Web3 is Going Just Great

A timeline recording only some of the many disasters happening in crypto, decentralized finance, NFTs, and other blockchain-based projects.

AI Sucks, Actually

that's it, that's the thesis

@_elena money-wise no. But as regards total control and power?

@davidgerard

@_elena

Quand ça va péter, ça va être horrible et spectaculaire.

@_elena @davidgerard @janbeta Just imagine the numbers without nVidia in the list (and should they really be counted? They actually make products…)
@bradthornborrow @_elena @davidgerard @janbeta As noted elsewhere, this is demonstration of the principle of 'in a gold rush, the guy making money is the guy selling the picks and shovels.'

@_elena @davidgerard

This reminds me the 2K dotcom era, and specifically this french parody website.😋

https://web.archive.org/web/20001206014800/http://www.vakooler.com/

Vakooler - Ki VaKooler aujourd'hui?

@fosdembsd
Thanks ! So much great memories of that era ! Was a paradise to be a webdesigner while.
@_elena that blue number increases way too much and way too fast for my liking #fuckai

@_elena
I sent this site to someone I know who preaches that “capitalism will shift the market towards saving the planet’s ecosystem”

He sent me back a screenshot of the change in NVDA price over the past couple years and said “It’s done pretty well for the past 3.5 years! The answer is yes, AI has been very profitable [for] anyone with exposure to those AI platform stocks in an IRA or 401(k) and many users of ChatGPT, Claude, etc, who pay little but now can’t imagine life without it”

@_elena
He went on to say
“You asked a simple question about whether AI is profitable, and it clearly has been for many people. I wasn’t making a value judgment about ‘worth it.’ The article you shared took too narrow a view”
without even a hint of irony. His density absolutely infuriates me.
@_elena All that is to say, I suppose, congratulations to the ~0.00001% of humanity who get to “profit” while the man-damned planet burns to the fucking ground.
@BmeBenji @_elena Is 401(k) a pension fund or something like that? That money is completely gone as soon as the bubble bursts. Disinvest now or regret later.
@_elena @davidgerard
Selling shovels & supplies was where the money was during most gold rushes.
@_elena been sending it around and everyone's sending it to me

@_elena @davidgerard

I'm engaged in a Mastodon chat with someone like this right now. I sent them the URL, but I don't think they opened it.

It's difficult to convince someone of something when their paycheck depend on them not understanding it.

@_elena @davidgerard

It's missing a "No (unless you're Nvidia)" footnote

@rvedotrc @_elena i believe it does show, not tell, that!
@_elena @davidgerard so, the question now is where are going them to allocate the debt, if it is possible (may be not).
@_elena @davidgerard Maybe only Apple is earning money :) their Mac minis and studio are perfect devices for local ai!
@_elena @davidgerard So basically Apple is the winner here? While they did not join the AI train because of internal issues, they might have dodged a bullet here?

@_elena @davidgerard

Thanks for sharing the info! 👍 🌹

@_elena @davidgerard I'm confus. I thought we don't like it when big companies make a profit. The AI companies are running as nonprofits? Is that bad. I don't know how to do financial.
@_elena Duckduckgo simply does not load that page, Chrome warns me that this website is dangerous. Intetesting.
@_elena @davidgerard And why is NVIDIA doing so much better than the others? Because it's the one that's earning money the others spend?

@nerpulus @_elena @davidgerard Now that is easy to answer: NVIDIA is selling graphics cards, real physical stuff that they produce in factories and sell for more than they cost to produce. That is their past, current and very real business model.

Everyone else is buying graphics cards or investing into others who want to build datacenters and hope to eventually find a business model for AI.

However, while NVIDIA does not depend on finding a business model for AI at the moment, when the bubble bursts and there are tons of chips in warehouses, their production will come to a halt too.

@_elena @davidgerard questo dimostra che @DataKnightmare ha ragione quando dice che nella corsa all'oro chi vince èvil venditore di pale e picconi.

@_elena @davidgerard @zverik

I am skeptical of the economics behind all the AI investments, but I'm not sure how this is supposed to convince anyone.

The big AI companies are operating at a loss on purpose to reel people in and make companies and people dependent. The jury is still out if this strategy will work.

Plotting total spend against total revenue right now does not really give any information on whether they can get ROI, except obviously that they'll need to earn a lot of money.

@bart @_elena @davidgerard @zverik It won't convince anyone.

I have boosters in my life who know they're the recipients of one of the largest subsidies in history and think it's worth it.

As for the strategy, it won't work. Traditional software "freemium" subsidizes have unit economics that don't explode when you add new users. But LLM power users can burn x1000 more tokens than the average user. I wrote about this "cargo cult" unit economics in a huge post.

@_elena @davidgerard Not surprised with Nvidia being the only one profitable in the list. “Sell the pick and shovel during a gold rush” as the saying goes
@_elena
This shows us that they could have been taxed an extra 1.4T

@_elena @davidgerard

A film maker gleeing at something not profitable.

Classic.

@_elena Anthropic just had its first profitable quarter. 😞
