Anyone else in the fediverse who does fieldwork in #linguistics ? #languages #language #indigenouslanguages #minoritylanguages (if you have suggestions for hashtags that will help me find other field linguists, please add them in a comment to this toot)
@smrms I do, but it’s not something I post about…
@transitionalaspect what language are you working on?
@smrms Dënë Sųłiné (N. America) mainly these days. Upper Tanana (ditto) before that!
@smrms and you?
@transitionalaspect mostly Andi and Botlikh, two East Caucasian languages spoken in Dagestan. though I haven't done any work on Andi for a while.

@smrms I don't know if any count as "field" linguists, but @amyfou , @nwarner & someone whose username I'm completely blanking on at UT Austin (I think) are all linguists. @BayesForDays is also, but I'm pretty sure they're in the wrong branch to what you want (doing computational stuff)

(side bar: how on earth do I follow 4 linguists? I would have said it was a sort of obscure field...)

@SRLevine Ahem. You follow five linguists 🙃

@justip Retired linguists never die they just (what is the linguistic equivalent to biologists "reaching equilibrium")?

I can't believe I forgot you!

@SRLevine @amyfou @nwarner @BayesForDays it's nice to find other linguists in the fediverse generally, so thank you for the suggestions!
@smrms I’m a retired sociolinguist in Canada, though no longer doing active fieldwork. When I did, though, your fine country was one of the places I did do fieldwork!
@justip interesting! what was your topic?
@smrms I am old and grey so I had many of those throughout my career. When it came to Dutch, though, my biggest project was a book about social media discourse.
@smrms my psycholinguist hubby @bananabull knows some!
@smrms I have a background in linguistics and anthropology but these days I work on cooperatives and economic democracy. I sent a follow request so I can follow any work you share (and I am a fan of textile art). I used to do research in Central Asia and the Caucasus, but I never ventured to study languages beyond Turkic and Indo-European families.
@leftyknowitall that's really interesting! nice to meet you :)
@smrms Nice to meet you as well. :)
@smrms "Gavagai."
@gmsizemore i had to look this up, was not familiar with Quine's work. interesting suggestion, thank you!
