I'm very happy to see how my 3-year journey replacing big tech with privacy-oriented, humane platforms is shaping:

Gmail: Tuta and Proton

Google Calendar: Fossify

Google Maps: Organic Maps

Twitter: Mastodon

Facebook, Instagram: Pixelfed

WhatsApp, Telegram: Signal

Android: GrapheneOS

Windows: Linux Mint

It was overwhelming, it took time and research. But I can tell you that another digital experience is possible.

Now I'm thrilled to have devices that belong to ME, like in the old days.

I shall add that what started my big-tech liberation journey was a Mastodon blog series by a lady doing a 30-day big-tech cleanse: each day, one service to ditch and alternatives.

Granted, it’s taken me much longer than 30 days. I’m nearly 3 years in.

Nonetheless, wherever you are, thank you for sparking the curiosity, and to this amazing community for existing.

I never imagined that leaving Twitter and trying out this Mastodon thing would be such a wholesome, transformative experience.

@linguistgoneforeign I'm finding organic maps better for walking directions (theres a couple of places where google doesn't understand the concept of 'footpath', and tells you to go on a whole detour)

@FeralFood

US-based companies and products certainly have a hard time understanding the concept of walking. πŸ˜…

@linguistgoneforeign Change needs time. I started switching from Microsoft Office to StarOffice (the grandfather of LibreOffice) 30 years ago and my first private Linux desktop run Ubuntu 0804 in 2008. And although I've avoided pitfalls like WhatsApp and Twitter, I'm still not quite there yet. My mobiles still use Android and in my country there is still no viable alternative for PayPal , Visa and MasterCard in sight. Next month is the first DiDay in my region. We’ll see what else is possible.

@M_E_ST

One day at a time!
Looking forward to DiDay. 😎

@linguistgoneforeign I'm interested in your choice of Tuta *and* Proton, why and what's the division of labor? Also what makes Fossify better than either of their calendars, if you feel like expounding

@aburka

Tuta was the first switch I made, it ticked all boxes for my primary email account whereas Proton didn't. Later on I created a few Proton accounts (one for online payments, one to drop when an email was address required, etc). It was also a conscious decision to diversify and not have all the information in one place.

@aburka

None of their calendars convinced me, and in the spirit of diversifying, I didn't want to have my emails and appointments in the same place.

Fossify was easy to set up on a server and comnect via DAVx5.

@linguistgoneforeign What about Google docs and Google drive?

@orrickle

I don't use either. Most of the writing I do is either via email or in a LibreOffice document (stored on my device).

@aburka @linguistgoneforeign I was just going to ask about Fossify as well. I use the Proton Calendar, but I am not married to it.
@linguistgoneforeign Boah, ΓΌber deine Liste habe ich gerade Tuta entdeckt. Sexy!
@linguistgoneforeign how organic maps can be a choice, without real time traffic?

@a40yostudent

I don't drive, so it has fulfilled my purpose up until now. πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

@linguistgoneforeign Replace 'old' Organic Maps with the new kid on the block: @CoMaps

@bash2

Thanks for the tip!
Checking it out now 🧐

@linguistgoneforeign @bash2
I’ve been happy with Magic Earth

https://www.magicearth.com

I do pay a little for the premium version but it’s worth it to me to no β€œbe the product.”

Haven’t used it for directions but I love being able to record my walks/runs and get time, distance, and elevation data.

I’ll take a look at CoMaps too.

Magic Earth

Where smart navigation meets open roads. Privacy first, by design.

@bash2 @linguistgoneforeign @CoMaps I've been passively keeping an eye out for an OSM client with an actually good UX to finally ditch Google Maps. Would you say CoMaps is there yet to be a full replacement?
@engideer @bash2 @linguistgoneforeign @CoMaps i use it as my daily driver. Sometimes I fall back to google maps whenever something i need isn't in osm.
Comaps isn't perfect but UX is one of the main priorities for the project and it definitely shows when compared to other osm clients.
And they are actively working on a number of the gaps that it does have.
I like it.
Hope this helps
@cubeofcheese Absolutely, it's good to know it's daily drivable. Just installed it and did have a very good first impression 😊
@linguistgoneforeign that's why I am on Mastodon

@linguistgoneforeign

Shots out to #purelymail for us .xyz degenerates too.

@linguistgoneforeign I have nextCloud instance, no regrets

@peteriskrisjanis

What do you use nextCloud for?

@linguistgoneforeign @peteriskrisjanis I'm also using nextcloud. The main points are cloud storage, different Caldav calendars for syncing and my address book.
@linguistgoneforeign It's hard work de-googling but so worth it, and I'm thrilled you mentioned Fossify - what a great project with so many privacy-respecting apps! Congrats on your journey!

@arcadia

Thank you! I'm very happy with Fossify synched across devices, it's color-coded too! ☺️

@linguistgoneforeign Ooh, I didn't know you could sync! Thanks for the heads up!

@linguistgoneforeign Did you have "Sign in with Google"? How painful was updating those?

Also: There's Kagi to replace Google. Although paid, it's many times better!

@vito

Fortunately, I rarely did the SSO with Google. πŸ™‚β€β†”οΈ

That would add some friction when trying to delete an account, but not impossible!

@linguistgoneforeign I want so much to get rid of Gmail, but I don't think I would be able to get G Suite (or whatever they call it now) again in case something goes sideways.

Also I have a few places I SSO'd. 😞

But I'll look into tuta! Maybe someday I get off this sinking ship. Thank you! <3

@vito

You can do it! The grass really is greener on the other side. ☺️

@vito
> I don't think I would be able to get G Suite

The basic office suite is avaliable with @protonprivacy subscription and it can be used as younglings supposed an app to be – in the browser ;)

That said you can also use LibreOffice if you need a heavyweight combo.

P.S. If all you need is to take a text note and be really proud⁂ you should try the console and type:
vim textnote.txt
Then tap 'Enter' ;)

⁂ that you found the way out :))

@linguistgoneforeign

@ohir @protonprivacy @linguistgoneforeign

Oh, per G Suite, I mean the business one. I don't use Google Docs or whatever else they provide, just Gmail and Google Calendar with a custom domain.

> vim textnote.txt
> Then tap 'Enter' ;)

Do you give this recommendation to anyone? How many people have you trapped for eternity in vim? :P
(heavy vim user here)

@vito
Not many, not for eternity but, yeah, I like to see the ascii-art produced this way :))

That said I had many many converts once they saw block cut/yank then paste. And telling them they can just tell vim the s,e lines to yank

@linguistgoneforeign What phone runs GrapheneOS?

@MisterWanko

You can flush GrapheneOS on Google Pixel phones. Aaah, the irony of getting a Google phone to get rid of Google entirely. 😬

@MisterWanko Btw you can get an "older" used Pixel in pristine condition on e.g. eBay for quite cheap nowadays. That's what I did to get on GrapheneOS. A budget of ~250-300€ is plenty. Best to try to get something from gen 8 onwards, since the older ones don't have many crucial hardware security features.
@linguistgoneforeign what have you found for search? I was happily using maapl but it seems to have conked out recently and just throws errors πŸ˜“

@cthon1c

Do you mean as a search engine? I've tried a few. I've been using DuckDuckGo for a while and can't complain.

@linguistgoneforeign yeah that’s what I meant. I was using DDG too for years but I started having to tell it I never want to see the AI summary every single time I used it. It never learned. πŸ˜πŸ™‚
DuckDuckGo - Protection. Privacy. Peace of mind.

The Internet privacy company that empowers you to seamlessly take control of your personal information online, without any tradeoffs.

DuckDuckGo
@linguistgoneforeign ha thanks I’ll try thatβ€”I have a bookmark and totally forgot about it πŸ™ƒ
@linguistgoneforeign gotta say it: it doesn't matter that e-mail is "encrypted". SMTP (protocol used to send e-mails between servers) isn't end-to-end encrypted and companies like Proton and Tuta are doing privacy-washing IMO (in terms of e-mail at least), nothing stops them from logging messages as they come in (before they encrypt them on disk). Just don't use e-mail for anything private (or use client-side encryption like PGP). Otherwise, good job, I've gone through similar journey.
@linguistgoneforeign that's awesome! congrats!! I've also been undertaking the journey of reclaiming my privacy, and it has been a rewarding experience indeed

@linguistgoneforeign Yay! Condragulations on getting so far! I'm still early in my journey, but so far:

Gmail (phasing out): Mailfence

Google Calendar: Mailfence / The Good Cloud (NextCloud)

Google/Apple Maps: CoMaps

Twitter: Mastodon

Facebook, Instagram: Pixelfed, Loops

WhatsApp: Signal (tbc: SimpleX)

iOS: tbc (hopefully a de-Googled OS on Fairphone)

macOS: tbc (hopefully Mint or similar)

[Unavoidable on work device: Microsoft/Windows and Google suite]

@linguistgoneforeign .
I've read the responses here with great interest because I have been doing the same here. I just can't pay $149 for an OS and oh by the way I don't own it and all of your data on your machine is mine!

Linux Mint is awesome, both Ubuntu and LDME versions.

Email: Betterbird

Browser: Waterfox or Librewolf

Search: StartPage but I'm looking since I saw Ed Snowden's endorsement.

Social Media: Mastodon, not perfect but hands above the rest. Much worth my time!

I really do feel liberated but my eyes are always open!! Best of luck to all. I see smart choices here.

@linguistgoneforeign bookmarked. I've made some of these switches already, want to make more. Thank you.

@linguistgoneforeign
Was your guide the opt - out project?

I'm not quite as far or deep as you, but overall, it feels so much better even if it's not quite as seamless.

@eldersea

Yes, it was! Thank you for reminding me, I'll send her a thank you message. πŸ’•

Best of luck in your journey.

@linguistgoneforeign I am part way along that journey, and I am very impressed.
