I'm very happy to see how my 3-year journey replacing big tech with privacy-oriented, humane platforms is shaping:

Gmail: Tuta and Proton

Google Calendar: Fossify

Google Maps: Organic Maps

Twitter: Mastodon

Facebook, Instagram: Pixelfed

WhatsApp, Telegram: Signal

Android: GrapheneOS

Windows: Linux Mint

It was overwhelming, it took time and research. But I can tell you that another digital experience is possible.

Now I'm thrilled to have devices that belong to ME, like in the old days.

@linguistgoneforeign gotta say it: it doesn't matter that e-mail is "encrypted". SMTP (protocol used to send e-mails between servers) isn't end-to-end encrypted and companies like Proton and Tuta are doing privacy-washing IMO (in terms of e-mail at least), nothing stops them from logging messages as they come in (before they encrypt them on disk). Just don't use e-mail for anything private (or use client-side encryption like PGP). Otherwise, good job, I've gone through similar journey.

@adrian

What would you suggest as alternatives to Tuta and Proton?

@linguistgoneforeign i currently use Soverin but they are pretty expensive so will probably switch to some random hosting (most likely my domain registrar). One thing I can recommend related to e-mail is getting your own domain (if you don't have one already) - makes switching providers a lot easier.
