If you see someone asking for help with using Mastodon and the wider Fediverse, please feel free to tag me into the thread.

I'm especially trying to help new or non-technical people who want straightforward easy-to-understand advice 🙂

(Also feel free to message or reply if you want help with something yourself!)

#FediTips

@FediTips You have always been helpful to me.
@FediTips thank you for all the work you do btw!

@stouthandel

Your reply is blank, did you mean to ask or write something?

@FediTips Tak and thank you for all your great tips and for helping people settle in here when they first arrive!

@FediTips What about an instant #Jitsi chat where people can ask you / me questions?

Jitsi is so simple EVERYONE can access it. No download.

(Matrix etc needs #install + understanding new things)

It's the #help Mastodon needs since day one. 1 hr a week sitting there as human to ask?

Happy to help.

#Jitsi chat =
⏺️ any device / any browser / any platform and
⏺️ #instant + no account and
⏺️ non-#commercial + #opensource
⏺️ Simple for grandma
⏺️ Getting as good as #Zoom

@collective_truth

I can't do regular chats myself, but if you want to set up something where you give advice I would be happy to promote it 🙂

@FediTips Ok I'll prepare for it...

If you have a #helpdesk graphic or similar ideas for #helping people, send me anything you like and I'll put an advert out... (you might have something already related to Fedi.Tips)

Maybe I'll take questions for the weekend or spontaneous "calls" whenever people drop by for simple or complicated answers... It's interesting what will happen!

@FediTips
Question right here, as you so kindly offered.

I posted a new video on our PeerTube account about 1 hour ago @steven_and_ellie_kennard but I don't see it from this account. I see older ones but not this one. It should be visible as I made it public. But...nothing yet.
Can you think why it isn't appearing?
Thanks!

@elliek

Could you try copying and then pasting this link into the search box in Mastodon?

https://makertube.net/w/78j17mQoxvKoYFfwfBvNW5

(To copy it, right click or long-press the link and then select "copy link")

Hopefully this makes your server notice the video 🙂

Also, are you following your PeerTube account from your Mastodon account? At least one person on your Mastodon server needs to be following an account for its posts to show up automatically on your server.

@FediTips
Thanks.
It says remote data could not be fetched. Retry
Yes, both of us are separately following that account from our zeroes.ca accounts.
@trendless @zeroes I wonder if you can shed some light on this?
@FediTips @trendless @zeroes ah now, on retry it has found it. No thumbnail (for that not for any of the others, actually).

@elliek

Yeah, it's worth trying again if it doesn't work first time, glad it appeared in the end. Don't worry about the thumbnails, that can vary between servers and over time.

I'm not sure why it wasn't appearing if you're following it. Might be worth clicking on the account name above the video to see if the follow is still working?

@FediTips
Yup, still following and notification bell on.
Thank you!
@elliek @FediTips how do you get a blue check mark
@annunzir27 @FediTips
You have to put the link to your fediverse account on your website. Then put your website address on your information on your profile. That's it. It's not a verification on the way other social media usually has it. It just verifies that the website is your own.

@elliek @annunzir27

There's no blue mark as such but the equivalent is a green link to your own website. There's more info about how to do this in the guide at https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-verify-my-account

If you see a blue mark like  that's not a verification, the only verification on here is a green link to an official website on a profile.

@FediTips can you please make a website called ExplainingTips, where you teach how to, as a tech-person, explain things to nontech-people

I really could improve my skill...

@mo

That's an interesting idea!

I guess a lot of it is down to experience with providing technical support to the public, so any site giving advice about being a tech support person would be good?

Trying to explain stuff in different ways and seeing what works with different people is the main thing I guess?

@FediTips

This is not a question but more a comment -- I just recently started to use mastodon regularly and I have the impression that it is a bit unhandy: When seeing my own posts I would expect that I can click "Beiträge" to see a list of them.

@JoachimJakobs

I think you're viewing an experimental interface that hasn't been officially released yet. The developers often use the mastodon.social server for testing new interfaces, and it looks like there's a bug in it where it doesn't show you the posts.

People on the release version of Mastodon do see posts when they click on the post number.

@FediTips

I just use mastodon.social -- no other interface... cannot click the post number -- seems to inactive....

@JoachimJakobs

The interface that mastodon.social uses is experimental, so it may have bugs like this. There is no other interface on the mastodon.social website.

However, you can use your account by other methods such as mobile apps. I've tried to list them at https://fedi.tips/which-apps-can-i-use-should-i-use-the-official-app-or-a-third-party-app
