Visibility still feels like the weak spot on PeerTube, so I built PeerSeek, my own search index, live at https://peerseek.video

Results are ranked how I think they should be and there is still a lot of work to be done. Please try it out and give me some feedback, or let me know if it's useful in any way.

PeerSeek
@polykit is there a trending filter? Highest views but also most recent?
@polykit it is not possible to watch videos directly from the service instead of opening everyvideo in new tabs?
@hiphopheaven @polykit I'm sure someone will implement this because people are lazy and entitled. But what's the big problem with driving traffic to content creators websites _really_?
@polykit Great - found some nice vids and chans! A nice feature would be option to sort by publish date :)
@polykit so it's an opinionated alternative to https://joinpeertube.org/browse-content ?
Browse PeerTube content | JoinPeerTube

Find PeerTube videos, channels and playlists by browsing PeerTube content using SepiaSearch!

JoinPeerTube
@polykit @thibaultmol I don’t know about that the peertube browse content needs a lot of work. This tool already does a better job of search than the browse tool. As examples, “music” works better in browse and “musician” works better in peerseek, in my opinion.
@polykit the blue text is extremely hard to read.
@Mrfunkedude thanks for the feedback! I'll look into it.
@polykit it's the link text. That color blue is hard to read at a distance on desktop.
@polykit @Mrfunkedude agreed, you've gotta change the css for it. other than that, it looks real useful
@polykit very fast and complete, for the things I looked up and already knew about, very promising!
@polykit Is it supposed to look like this? I cannot read the text at all, I see that there's dark-blue text on a dark-grey background, but I cannot read the text unless I highlight it, the contrast is too low
@vaporeon_ no, it shouldn’t look like this. Which browser are you using?
@polykit LibreWolf 146.0.1-1, on Gentoo Linux.
@vaporeon_ that's a Firefox variant, no? Is it still like this with the fix I pushed this morning?
@polykit Just tried again, it's fixed now, thanks. Much better. And yes, it's a Firefox fork.
@polykit Sounds really good ! Might just give me the incentive I need to use PeerTube more 😁
@polykit maybe make the search bar sticky
@polykit excellent! Bookmarked in my Fedi folder.

@polykit this feels like it would work as a #peertube player app. It feels so much simpler to see the recent and trending videos on the landing page:). Maybe even include the option to login in with Mastodon creds if they want to follow/like/comment without the need for a peertube account🤷

Great initiative, I can't wait to see where this goes:)

@polykit thanks for that initiative 👍

colours are horrible on Firefox/Linux though, blue text on blueish background is a pain for the eyes 😵‍💫

where/how can additional Peertube servers be submitted to that index?

@tobozo I wonder why that is, I also use Firefox on Linux, see screenshot, I'll look into it. I use the instances index from Peertube at https://instances.joinpeertube.org/instances
@polykit haha did you just fix the issue?
@tobozo yeah, I changed something. Did it work?

@polykit yup looks fixed, much better, thanks 👍

I've added a peertube server to joinpeertube, let's see how much time it needs to propagate 👀

BTW the server video.ploud.fr was already in the peertube index, but for some reason the videos from this channel don't come up when searched by keyword or username:

https://video.ploud.fr/c/virtutv/videos

Le Hangar de Virtualabs

Pour le moment, cette chaîne propose les enregistrements des streams Twitch de Virtualabs, diffusés sur https://twitch.tv/virtualabs (en attendant de streamer sur Peertube, un jour).

Ploud Video France

@polykit raw ideas:

- Use <datalist> instead of <select> for search filters (anything with more than 10 items), eventually allow multiple selection
- "Add instance" header button with link to the corresponding joinpeertube page

@polykit nice! perhaps share the index so other instances can disttibute the load?
@polykit Just done a little digging so far, this is a great tool! Hope this gives peertube some needed boost to counter YouTube’s dominance.

@polykit Thanks for building and sharing, I like it!
Because the results appear fast, the grid (on a big screen) shows more at once and I received different results than searching on makertube or sepia.

Would be great if a minus-prefix on search terms would translate into a NOT.
Currently searching for "1980s -AI" results in only the AI related videos.
But I know you're just starting, so this is just an idea for the future development.

@polykit How do I remove my video from your search engine?
@Baggypants tell me your instance, account and legitimate interest and I’ll remove it from the index.
@polykit Can you also prevent future videos from being indexed?
@Baggypants if you give me your details, yes
