"Where to buy a non-Apple, non-Google smartphone"

I use a #Librem5 #Linux #phone. With the default #PureOS operating system.

Enjoy your #freedom, break free from #Google and #Apple.

Have a full Linux computer in your pocket that you can also use for calling.

Where to buy a non-Apple, non-Google smartphone

: Both Cupertino and Google are imposing ever stricter limits on their phones – but you have alternatives

@janvlug If we want opensource mobile OSes to succeed, they need officially supported banking apps and identity verification apps. These are crucial to me but they only exist on iOS and Android.

@superblox I oppose organizations that force me to use #apps from #bigtech platforms.

There is an interesting page in Dutch about #appdwang:

https://appdwang.nl/

I can bank via the browser, everything below €5000 (I use ASNBank). Identity verification sucks, but often there are options to do it without an app as well. Like going with your id to an office, or someone is visiting you to verify your id.

@janvlug I'm not prepared to make life a lot harder for myself just to be able to use Linux on mobile.

When I degoogled, I already had to compromise on usability. I wanted a European alternative that implemented mail snoozing, so I went with Proton. Searching inside e-mail messages barely works. When I edit documents in the Proton Drive app, my cursor jumps around. I'll omit the rest of my rant.

I'm not going to carry around a Digipass for bank stuff and a laptop to log in with eID over USB.

@janvlug I really think we need those apps to be first-class citizens of the PostmarketOS ecosystem. Otherwise it will only convince a small group of diehards who are willing to sacrifice a lot for Linux.

@superblox This is also a chicken egg problem. If there are little #MobileLinux users the motivation to create apps for Linux will be smaller. If there are less apps, there will be less #MobileLinux users.

I decided to have a Linux phone to break this circular dependency a little. One more mobile Linux user.

Fortunately, I see that more and more is possible via the browser.

@janvlug I applaud your idealism. But PostmarketOS will not reach anyone other than very techy users until it is at least as convenient to use as Android/iOS, and banks will never invest in a niche mobile platform unless forced to.

Perhaps the EU has a role to play here. If they make sure Wero and eIDAS operators are forced to support mobile Linux, the big tech duopoly on mobile can be broken.

@superblox If it works in the browser, it works on #MobileLinux.

Wero works totally fine in the browser without an app for me, as long as I stay below €5000.

@janvlug In Belgium banks have strong security measures to prevent fraudsters from stealing money from my bank account. I like it that way.

The traditional method to authenticate online transactions is Digipass, an airgapped bank card reader that you keep in a drawer at home. Good for desktop usage, not on the go.

The newer method is Itsme, a mobile application that only works on Android and iOS.

So that's why I'm stuck on Android for mobile payments.

@superblox I used to have a Digipas from ASNBank. But they stopped handing them out :-(
Now they have a so called "browsercode" that you can use for payments below €5000.
@janvlug How does the browser code work? If someone manages to extract my session cookie using a rogue browser extension, could they steal € 5000 per transaction? Could they steal 50x € 5000?

@superblox I do not know how it is technically implemented.

There is a limit of €5000 per day, I see now.
