Almost all of my non-tech friends are on #Jabber/#XMPP (because I pestered them) and the few who are on iOS, use #Monal by @Monal.

Btw. they are rewriting the complete UI to solve some issues and make it modern looking.

@debacle how did you help them find a server to join for XMPP? Do you have some recommendations, or do you run your own instance?

@pkw @Monal

@debacle answered my own question by looking... This seems a reasonable start.

I suppose for my less literate friends I could pre-select a few for them to choose from:

XMPP Providers - Which XMPP provider suits you best?

The XMPP Providers project offers a curated list of XMPP providers for you to choose from. It’s your choice!

@bobdobberson @pkw

Yes, @xmpp_providers and @joinjabber are good resources to find a #Jabber server.

At that time, I did not yet have my own #Jabber server, so I pointed them to well-known instances. It's better, if they are on different servers anyway, so they would not depend on me.

For those, you prefer an accound tied to their phone number, I asked them to install #Quicksy https://quicksy.im/ That worked out amazingly well. They did not need any help from my side.

Note, that Quicksy is practically #Monal on iOS, and #Conversations_im on Android.

Quicksy

A spin-off of the popular Jabber/XMPP client Conversations with automatic contact discovery. Sign up with your phone number and Quicksy will automatically—based on the phone numbers in your address book—suggest possible contacts to you.
