If you want a combat system with races, classes, etc., like a text WoW, go with a diku derivative. Circle is clean, and will compilw on anything. ROM and SMAUG are both much more full featured, and iirc have built-in area editors.
If you're looking for a virtual world like second life or metaverse, look for something calling itself a mush, muck, or moo. I think lambdamoo is still maintained.
