Sovereign Tech Agency funding

Announcing a service agreement for new work to improve Mastodon and the broader ecosystem.

@Mastodon @sovtechfund Great news for Mastodon and the Fediverse!
@Mastodon @sovtechfund Who owns or controls the Sovereign Tech Agency? In other words, where is the money coming from?

Sovereign Tech Agency

@r10s @VogueLaGalere @Mastodon @sovtechfund

Or in short: public funding from Germany on the federal level

@jonasgraphie @r10s @Mastodon @sovtechfund Thank you. The name made me thing of another institution from another country whose ethos I have serious concerns about.

German government support is a good thing and hopefully serves as an example for my country, the United States which, regrettably, has sunk to a new low.

Sovereign Tech Agency - Wikipedia

@VogueLaGalere @jonasgraphie @r10s @Mastodon @sovtechfund I wonder if this funding for #Mastodon is intended to help extricate #Germany and the #EU from the grip of American information technology. Positioning the #Fediverse to replace eX-Twitter and Bluesky.
@VogueLaGalere @Mastodon @sovtechfund why not simply go to the website and check? ;) https://www.sovereign.tech/faq
FAQ | Sovereign Tech Agency

Sovereign Tech Agency
@paul @Mastodon @sovtechfund Because I am completely unfamiliar with what the institution is, hence my question. I do know of a Saudi Arabian fund that is referred to as "sovereign" and that concerned me. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_Investment_Fund So your response assumes I have knowledge of which fund, which I did not.
Public Investment Fund - Wikipedia

@VogueLaGalere @Mastodon @sovtechfund „The Sovereign Tech Agency is financed by the German Federal Ministry for Digital Transformation and Government Modernisation and is a subsidiary of SPRIND, the Federal Agency for Disruptive Innovation.“ first paragraph of the link I send which can be found on the account Mastodon mentions.

It’s funded my German tax payers like me.

@Mastodon @sovtechfund Blocklist synchronisation is vital for the survival of the platform, good news
@stragu @SecoasecasMouse afaik @Mastodon is currently still under German jurisdiction anyway, if the German government wanted them to censor certain content (on Mastodon.social or a gmbh-operated FASP server) they could probably already tell them so. The funding doesnt change much in that regard.. and I do not think Mastodon would agree to such demands.
@Mastodon @sovtechfund The Sovereign Tech Agency is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Digital Transformation and Government Modernisation.

@Mastodon @sovtechfund

This is great news … I’m impressed by Germany’s use of public funds for the common good.

This sort of thing is increasingly unlikely to take place in the United States, where public funds are diverted to line the pockets of the billionaire cabal.

@Mastodon @sovtechfund Oh wow, the scope of this work is fantastic. Huge thanks to everyone involved working on putting this together.
@Mastodon @sovtechfund Amazing, so happy to see this! 🙌
@Mastodon @sovtechfund great so you can add “copy hyperlink” support back to the iOS client then?
@Mastodon @sovtechfund congra and thx you Mastodon Team 💪👍😃

@Mastodon
Automated content detection baked into Mastodon is the end of the fediverse as a privacy-respecting network

@sovtechfund

@Mastodon @sovtechfund

Great news on most levels!

But it could also be a curse to get "free money" like this. So be careful not to become dependent on this cash flow to continue and do not accept any strings attached. Stay independent!

@Mastodon

A "Fediverse Auxiliary Service Provider" is nothing but an external ingestion server that gets notified about every new post. That's what the API is made for.

Trying to introduce a "Automated content detection" based on this is nothing but trying to normalize pinging external server infrastructures outside the Fediverse, filling their post ingestion queues.

And you dare to dub this exploitation "Fediverse Auxiliary Service Provider".

The Mastodon instance is the provider here.

It is turned into a Fediverse Post Extradition Provider.

Well done whoever worked to get this funding! 👏👏👏👍

@Mastodon @sovtechfund Congratulations! I'm really looking forward to seeing Mastodon and other federated services grow over the coming years 💯
@Mastodon @sovtechfund Beautiful ! Congratulations !
@Mastodon @sovtechfund Glad to see that work on moderation tools will be done, and that other projects will also get financial help with implementing the new protocols
@Mastodon Honestly, this makes me queasy. No matter how noble, it is still gov and capable of turning on an election outcome. I’ve supported M because of user funding. I’m guessing it makes others queasy too.
@Mastodon @sovtechfund @gubi @evan Amazing news, I can’t wait to see #E2EE implemented for private messages! 🎉
