The most popular messengers in the world use proprietary protocols. It works. Nobody care about the software they use being compliant with a random pile of RFCs as long as sending cat pics to grandma just works. The burden of bureaucratic standardization and maintenance of multiple implementation that will never reach to 100% compatibility killed and is still killing most initiative for an universal messenger. 2.51+ releases are rolling into stores: Video/Audio Calls and Channels are not experimental but part of the default feature set now 💫

Calls and channels are always end-to-end encrypted, and only you and your contacts know each other's identity and metadata (avatars, names, keys etc.)

For calls, Delta uses a minimal Rust WebRTC turn server https://github.com/chatmail/chatmail-turn#turn-server-for-chatmail-relays running on hundreds of relays worldwide. It helps to establish P2P media streams, or for relaying traffic if P2P connections fail.

Reminder: There are no accounts in the classic sense anywhere with #chatmail or #deltachat.

It's all private profiles on end user devices which co-ordinate in a #p2p fashion. Chat profiles *use* email (relay) addresses for transporting messages through a federated e2ee-restricted SMTP network.

A chat profile or chat group has zero data on the server. It's radically different from classic email servers, Whatsapp, Signal, XMPP and Matrix servers which host and control chat identity.

While onboarding is extremely easy, the real challenge is to find initial contacts or circles to chat with. There is no discovery and no central registry. Every new chat profile is private and nobody knows about it other than your contacts. So we are curious. What is the current number of chats (1:1 or group chats or channels) you have with #deltachat apps? Not contacts but chats you have read or wrote something into, in the last months.

Parla is no longer depending on DeltachatDesktop to work, it's now able to create, transfer profiles and relays by itself. Looking forward distros to help me draw the best way to ship a separate jsonrpc server, maybe even sandboxed separately from the UI app for security reasons. i'm open to suggestions here :) But hopefully this way we can get the flatpak ready https://github.com/trufae/parla/releases/tag/0.2.4 #deltachat #gnome #flatpak

Doch, man kann es herbeireden. Man nennt das Werbung.

#DeltaChat hat schon vieles, vor allem ein leicht bedienbares Onboarding. Oma und Opa freuen sich über nutzerfreundliches Einloggen. Kostenlos, im Gegensatz zu #Threema. Telefonnummer nicht erforderlich.

Mehrere Profile verwendbar.

Das einzige, was wirklich noch nicht top ist, ist die aktuell fehlende Adminfunktion in Gruppen.

Man muss diese Messenger immer einfach irgendwo benennen, ständig drüber schreiben.

Verteilt eure Nutzernamen, IDs oder Einladunglinks in E-Mail-Signaturen, in Portalen, in Foren etc.

Klebt QR-Codes als Kontaktlinks dahin, wo sie von den Leuten gelesen werden die euch erreichen sollen.

Man kann die QR-Codes auf Anstecker, Bierdeckel, Visitenkarten oder einfach einen Aushang drucken.

Mit DeltaChat einfach mit separatem Profil Gruppen für einzelne Events erzeugen und den Einladungslink vor Ort auslegen, damit sich Teilnehmer so connecten können.

Einfach anfangen, und nicht damit aufhören.
