Under the hood, we are using IETF Internet Messaging specifications commonly tagged as "email". Sounds old, right? Actually there is a lot of new stuff going on! For example, #chatmail apps now fully support:
- RFC9788 ("Header Protection") to achieve minimal metadata
- RFC9580 ("OpenPGP") to use modern cryptography
By comparison, "Messaging Layer Security (MLS)" has an older numbered RFC9420 (and doesn't have mass-usable app releases).
Maybe time to revisit old/new assumptions? :)
After three intense months of work from more than a dozen contributors, #deltachat 2.48 releases are rolling. Maybe the most feature-packed releases ever?
- "zero metadata" messaging
- native Audio/Video calls on Android and iOS, as well as UbuntuTouch
- Group and Channel descriptions
- A new background audio player
- Revamped Download-on-Demand
and, last but not least, the long-awaited next-generation of messaging resiliency through "multi-path" routing ....
End-to-End Encryption is good but metadata protection counts as much. Names, group descriptions and memberships, avatars, who talks to whom ...
Both #deltachat and #signal go to great length to protect all the metadata that WhatsApp grants itself gratuitously. #Matrix stores similar scales of metadata on their servers, even if you can choose which server stores it.
Everything is better than #Telegram which additionally stores message contents in all group chats/channels and most 1:1 chats.

Without any extra apps, just using #DeltaChat, you can read #Gemini capsules on any operating system where Delta Chat runs, using bots:
This is useful because you can then forward the message to groups or other friends without them needing to install any app to read the capsule
