If they can automatically enroll men into the draft at 18, they can automatically register all americans to vote at 18.

Ask yourself why they won't.

#politics #WarMachine #VoterRegistration

Getting really tired of people unclear on the concept.

For selective service, you have to either go to a website yourself, or mail in a postcard. It's NOT automatic, in fact you are required to do it yourself within 30 days of your birthday.

And in my state (not all states, but in mine and some others) they actually DO automatically register you to vote when you go to the DMV, which here you typically do on your birthday.

No offense, but in most regards, your memes are ass backwards.

Deliberately not directing this at one person, because this crap seems to be going around right now, I've seen this misconception posted 3 times in the last two days.
@wyatt_h_knott Did you see this but of news?
https://www.airforcetimes.com/news/your-military/2026/04/08/automatic-registration-for-us-military-draft-eligible-men-to-begin-in-december/
That would be why you're seeing this sentiment pop up so much the last few days. Yes, I know voter registration is a state-level thing and selective service is federal. But any state that claims they can't do automatic voter registration in the modern era is just lying.
Automatic registration for US military draft-eligible men to begin in December

Automatic registration into Selective Service was mandated in December 2025, when President Donald Trump signed into law the fiscal year 2026 NDAA.

Air Force Times
@Jumpmed Of course they're lying because they actually do it in my state.
@wyatt_h_knott so why are you here downplaying memes? @Jumpmed

@wyatt_h_knott

I came on to basically say the same thing. You beat me to it.

@wyatt_h_knott

What's ass backwards is saying it is NOT automatic and at same time say some states are automatic.

What's also ass backwards is not being automatically registered to vote not having to pay a poll tax for a special ID, unable to just send in a postcard to be registered.

What's also ass backwards is downplaying the reinstatement of the automatic draft during warmongering 30-40 years ago, iRAN 1980, Desert storm type BS...
Carter actually reinstated registering in 1980, July.

@SCALETHEORY whats ass backwards is being upset that the reg for the draft is now automatic. who gives a fuck if its bits or pisscards, the fucking draft is wrong but everyone here butthurt over which FUCKING SYSTEM is possible.

get the fuck over yourselves amd go check your own voter reg, just like I do IN THE STATE WITH AUTO REG

FUCK YOUR NANNY STATE

@grrlscientist This happens in every civilized democracy. Ask yourself why the USA is the exception.

@Eetschrijver @grrlscientist in the UK voter registration is not automatic, you have to make the effort to claim it, so further proof we are not a civilised democracy either.

"Previously, the 'head of household' was responsible for registering everyone who lived at the address, but now every individual is responsible for their own voter registration. The new system also means that people are now able to register online. Anyone newly registering under the new system will need to register themselves individually by filling out a paper or online form."

Electoral registration in the United Kingdom - Wikipedia

@marjolica @Eetschrijver @grrlscientist Strange. Could this be an Anglosphere thing? Do other commonwealth countries do this too?

@xerge @marjolica @Eetschrijver @grrlscientist In Australia we have to register ourselves to vote. Once you’re registered you’re legally required to vote at every relevant election from local council up to federal. But if you never register, you can avoid voting. I’ve only ever met one adult in my entire life who admitted to not registering.

Aussies overwhelmingly view voting as both a privilege and a civic duty.

@marjolica
But is that for each election or once and for all?
@grrlscientist
@Eetschrijver @grrlscientist you do have to renew your entry in the electoral register at intervals (mostly because some people change their address and hence where they are eligible to vote) but it isn't every year or every election. You can also opt for a postal vote, either perpetually or just for a particular election.
@grrlscientist In some states they can't. Like I'm from Wyoming, which requires you to declare a party affiliation. And they have no way of knowing that. What's weird though is "voter fraud panicked" states like Texas (where I currently live...if you can call it that) does not.
@praetor @grrlscientist Officially requiring disclosure of party affiliation automatically makes the election non-free.
@ahltorp @grrlscientist I don't understand the idea behind it. It's a pretty common thing in the Mountain region. Had to when I lived in Wyoming, Utah and Colorado. No clue why.

@praetor @grrlscientist But surely the state legislature can change the party affiliation rule at the same time as they decide to "automatically register" people?

The whole concept of "automatically registering" is backwards anyway. There shouldn't be any registering of anything. When you register to vote, don't they check that against something, and why isn't that the register in the first place?

@praetor @ahltorp @grrlscientist Because Republicans like to go into Democrat camps and manipulate things. They get really scared the Democrats might do the same shit, so they make laws to prevent it. Laws they have no intention at all in following.
@praetor @grrlscientist I assume they cannot catch yo lying (as in, checking what you voted), so would there be any downside for doing so ("I'm republican! [quietly votes Dem]")? It could even break all the gerrymandering...
@mdione @praetor @grrlscientist Declaring party affiliation is not declaring who you intend to vote for but which party's primaries you're entitled to vote in.
@dalias @praetor @grrlscientist then even better? Vote for the leftiest you can find there :-P
@mdione @dalias @grrlscientist Believe it or not, I was a Republican in Wyoming for YEARS! But Republicanism in Wyoming, at least the way I was raised because I'm from there, doesn't work the same way it does everywhere else. It kinda does now because of MAGA. But it's way more Libertarian if anything. Party of Lincoln sort of thing. When I moved to Texas, seriously conservative red state, I'm like "you people are all fucking crazy" and went Libertarian. And now I'm Democrat.
@mdione @dalias @praetor @grrlscientist a *lot* of left-leaning people in conservative areas have already done this for decades (presumably vice-versa as well but i’m not chatting with conservatives so idk), since often the only competitive race is the primary.
@grrlscientist I really don't know if it's best, but at least in Argentina you not only get registered to vote at 18 (to the point where 'register to vote' is not even part of our language), voting is also compulsory. Unless you have a good reason (for instance, being 500km+ from your place of vote), you face fines and even passport retention.

@grrlscientist Ah, but, there's a big difference. Be aware that no such scheme will be 100% accurate, and ask yourself what are the consequences of false positives:

* for the draft, you get more cannon fodder than you're actually entitled to - which is useful and therefore good

* for the vote, you might allow people to vote who shouldn't - which is catastrophically bad

@grrlscientist

If they can automatically enroll men into the draft at 18, they can automatically register Americans to vote at 18.
Ask yourself why they won't.

@grrlscientist In Germany, they do the latter.

  • As soon as someone's eligible to vote!
@grrlscientist also ask why #Elections ain't done on #Sundays or why people don't get time off to vote / or at the very least easy access to #MailInVoting!

@grrlscientist "Would you stop pestering me with stupid questions you already know the answer to???"

I think I annoyed myself.

@grrlscientist They don't want you to speak, they want you to die.
@grrlscientist Two different “they”s in operation here. Selective Service is federal and voter registration is handled by the states.

@grrlscientist

"questions, always with the questions" - the only those registered to daft can vote act

@grrlscientist My wife and I wondered the same thing when we heard this...
@grrlscientist very true about voting, the open secret of disenfranchisement by stealth is not so secret. I’d add that if they can enroll men into the draft, they can enroll all genders. People forget there’s other dimensions to gender equality.
