If they can automatically enroll men into the draft at 18, they can automatically register all americans to vote at 18.

Ask yourself why they won't.

@grrlscientist In some states they can't. Like I'm from Wyoming, which requires you to declare a party affiliation. And they have no way of knowing that. What's weird though is "voter fraud panicked" states like Texas (where I currently live...if you can call it that) does not.
@praetor @grrlscientist Officially requiring disclosure of party affiliation automatically makes the election non-free.
@ahltorp @grrlscientist I don't understand the idea behind it. It's a pretty common thing in the Mountain region. Had to when I lived in Wyoming, Utah and Colorado. No clue why.

@praetor @grrlscientist But surely the state legislature can change the party affiliation rule at the same time as they decide to "automatically register" people?

The whole concept of "automatically registering" is backwards anyway. There shouldn't be any registering of anything. When you register to vote, don't they check that against something, and why isn't that the register in the first place?

@praetor @ahltorp @grrlscientist Because Republicans like to go into Democrat camps and manipulate things. They get really scared the Democrats might do the same shit, so they make laws to prevent it. Laws they have no intention at all in following.
@praetor @grrlscientist I assume they cannot catch yo lying (as in, checking what you voted), so would there be any downside for doing so ("I'm republican! [quietly votes Dem]")? It could even break all the gerrymandering...
@mdione @praetor @grrlscientist Declaring party affiliation is not declaring who you intend to vote for but which party's primaries you're entitled to vote in.
@dalias @praetor @grrlscientist then even better? Vote for the leftiest you can find there :-P
@mdione @dalias @grrlscientist Believe it or not, I was a Republican in Wyoming for YEARS! But Republicanism in Wyoming, at least the way I was raised because I'm from there, doesn't work the same way it does everywhere else. It kinda does now because of MAGA. But it's way more Libertarian if anything. Party of Lincoln sort of thing. When I moved to Texas, seriously conservative red state, I'm like "you people are all fucking crazy" and went Libertarian. And now I'm Democrat.
@mdione @dalias @praetor @grrlscientist a *lot* of left-leaning people in conservative areas have already done this for decades (presumably vice-versa as well but i’m not chatting with conservatives so idk), since often the only competitive race is the primary.
