Advice requested! Looking for a simple, affordable, two disk (mirrored) NAS.

main use:
-network file share there via our laptops (Windows, Linux). Just basic drag & drop is fine. Preferably without dedicated software.

-serve media (via our AndroidTV box).

nice to have:
-access to music (.mp3 .flac) on phones (iOs) while outside our own network.

-outside access to files.

User level: am not an idiot but value my time and our money. Am happy with basic products.

Ok. Rådene her har overbevist os om at købe en Synology NAS! Tak!

Nu... er HDD med leveringstider denne måned (i stedet for 2027...) ekstremt dyre lige nu. Har du nogle tips til et "anstændigt" prissat Seagate eller WD 3 til 6TB HDD (i Danmark)?

#technology

English: We'll buy a Synology NAS. Thanks for the advice!

I just learned even small (4 to 6TB) NAS drives are difficult to find*, let alone at any price resembling sanity.

Any tips for a somewhat affordable 3, 4 or 6TB NAS HDD (Seagate or WD red) deliverable to Denmark are much appreciated.

*with stores casually mentioning delivery windows in 2027..

And the Synology NAS arrived! It's an excellent looking box and now has one disk in it (and will probably get two once prices go down). As seen on the photo it found a place in our datacenter.

We went for a "demo" one and apart of missing two tiny screws it appears as new. Glad we did (the hdd is new).

Again thanks for advice :-)

edit: yes, I am indeed proud of my excellent cable management.

@Pepijn is that a gas boiler?
@Pepijn LOLing at the cable management comment. Amateur! 😂 And who is the lil' brown guy in the middle? 🥹

@cazmockett Cable management = all ends are plugged into a thing.

That's Søren. He's my friendly health & safety brick companion.

@Pepijn nice to meet you Søren! 😂
@Pepijn THIS is cable management (and yes, I knew where each wire went, at least as far as the video cables were concerned. The audio corks were Somebody Else's Problem). 😂

@cazmockett Hah. That's indeed pro-stuff!

I love how the schematic in the third photo gives the impression of a simple nicely connected system.

@Pepijn the thing on the white board? I'm not even sure that had anything to do with what we were doing 😅
@Pepijn your best bet might be breaking into an AI datacenter 😭 (sorry, not very helpful advice, I know)
@cazmockett I'll better get my spy-duck ready :-)
@Pepijn maybe take a look at the “CCTV NVR” drives. I’ve used those in my truenas box. Key thing for me is they’re rated for 24/7 use.
@Pepijn You can buy anywhere in the EU

@Pepijn

Sadly buying storage media NOW is bad news to yer pockets!
I was going to suggest getting a Raspberry pi & DIY? I did for home, but even their costs are $illy now in just a few weeks! & That's just the board!

I'm hanging onto my old raid on a dedicated pc board for work, & transferring stuff off, to a raid 1 as it becomes old and not accessed much

@Pepijn For a Synology, be careful you buy one that allows "3rd party" drives. https://tweakers.net/nieuws/240078/synology-laat-gebruikers-toch-thirdparty-hdds-gebruiken-bij-plus-nassen.html

Otherwise you're limited to "certified" drives, which are much more expensive.

I'm using my Synology with WD Ultrastar drives, and that's working just fine. They're not the most quiet, but are very suited for NASes. I've had less luck with WD Gold's in a Synology in the past.

Bought everything at https://azerty.nl and also had them assemble it (which turned out to be a good decision)

Tweakers

@Pepijn And, not to second guess your already made decision but FYI: If you're looking for a really silent NAS, my brother just got this https://tweakers.net/pricewatch/2132390/terramaster-f8-ssd-plus.html with 4x 8TB SSDs, and is very happy with it.

He even set it up it with a dedicated VPN tunnel so that wherever he is in the world, it's as if his NAS is just a folder on his computer, laptop, and/or phone.

He built it himself, and the VPN tunnel did take more research and tweaking than my Synology did, but he likes that stuff ;-)

@ebbe No second guessing here: I DON'T like this stuff (in part as I get annoyed at the costs) ;-)

I wonder what your brother is using it for. Four drives constantly (or mostly) spinning must use a lot of a electricity.

edit: ah, SSD. Bit less energy then. Still somewhat overkill for our use ;-)

@Pepijn His prime reason for going with an SSD solution was the almost complete lack of any noise. Mine is hidden away in a shelve in the kitchen, so I don't care about the noise that much.

We both use our NASes as on-site backup solution, media/file server, and hosting shared files. The Synology can do a lot more (webserver, email server, collaboration, office suite, etc) but I guess I only really use ±25% of what it can do. I'm considering going for a simpler/cheaper SSD solution in ±3 years

@Pepijn But that also heavily depends on prices of SSD memory by that time. My brother was lucky that he bought his memory bars just before the big price jumps.

BTW, my previous solution was this: https://www.westerndigital.com/products/network-attached-storage/wd-my-cloud-expert-series-ex2-ultra?sku=WDBVBZ0000NCH-NESN

For simple use cases (backups, network storage, and rudimentary access via internet/app if you need your files remotely or on your tablet/phone) it was absolutely sufficient. And the big plus; It's an all in one out of the box solution, little building/tweaking required.

Western Digital

@Pepijn And it's probably cheaper than a Synology + 2 large volume drives: https://tweakers.net/nas/wd/my-cloud-ex2-ultra_p474987/vergelijken/

You do have to cut the listed storage in half though, if you want to use RAID, which you probably do want. So one listed as 8TB is technically indeed 8TB of space, but in RAID it's actually "only" 4TB practically.

I just ordered a two bay Synology and one 4TB disk (is fine for now, plus it was more expensive than the NAS..).

We don't have an issue with noise but the reliability and lower electricity use of SSD is nice. I think once prices go down we'll buy two 8TB SSD drives to future proof it.

@ebbe

@Pepijn Yep, same for me! I spent more on drives than on the NAS itself 😂

Hopefully this whole AI hyperscaler data center nonsense bubble pops soon, and memory prices can go back to somewhat normal....

@Pepijn hmm, so the used 6TB I replaced in my DS716 a few years ago, might be worth something! Sorry to say I am a bit far away from you (Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia)! I have others I should check out as well! Every cloud has a silver lining. 😊
@Pepijn if you do find a reasonable place to buy some NAS drives I’d love it if you could share the link (after you’ve had a chance to secure your order of course!) I’m in need of some myself and the prices are not good these days 😞.

@wylan Not really. I just ordered one of these drives at around 170 euro for 4TB (https://compumail.dk/da/p/seagate-ironwolf-harddisk-st4000vn006-4tb-sata-600-5400rpm-1000370061). It'll go in the two-bay Synology NAS that was "just" 150 euro (and a bit less than the one-bay option).

For now this is fine for us and a good replacement for the now over ten year old one we have and will use for backups.

We'll future proof it with two larger disks once prices go down in a year or two.

@Pepijn Thanks for your posts 😇. I also need a new Synology, so I now have relevant information to start my search 😉. @wylan
@DanielleVossebeld @Pepijn I hope you can find what you need for not too ridiculous a price! It’s a real bummer how much drives have jumped up recently!
@wylan I have no clue yet what the current prices are. 🫣 But one of my disks has crashed, so I do need something new……….. 😅 @Pepijn
@DanielleVossebeld @Pepijn unfortunately they seem to be much higher than just six months or so ago. But if you’ve got a crashed disk then you’re definitely in need of something soon 😬
@wylan I still have the external back-ups, if it completely crashes. 😇
@Pepijn
@Pepijn thanks for the link!

@Pepijn Storage og RAM er ikke længere anstændigt prissat nogen steder.

ProShop har diske sidst jeg kiggede for et par dage siden, men der er kvoter på hvor mange man må købe.
