The disappearing and unappreciated art of audible alerts

YouTube
@TechConnectify missed opportunity if there’s not a recreation of your absolutely iconic “awooga” from years past
@jamwaffles @TechConnectify It's already a reference to an older video: https://youtu.be/AxXsIQDafog
How many references do you want?
Faking It: The Obviously Dubbed Telephone Ring

YouTube

@Stephanie @TechConnectify @jamwaffles I do question whether the Doorman reference was intentional.

"Shouldn't that be 'knock knock?'"

@TechConnectify I already know I'm gonna love this one. I bought a book on audio engineering in part so I could learn how to make noises with simple equipment to add audible alerts to all manner of things.
Škoda DuoBell: A bicycle bell that outsmarts even smart headphones - Škoda Storyboard

Pedestrians wearing headphones are exposed to an increased risk of accidents. In an effort to reduce collisions with cyclists, Škoda Auto, in collaboration with scientists, introduces an innovative bicycle bell whose sound can penetrate even active noise cancellation systems. In doing so, it helps prevent injuries to both pedestrians and cyclists.

@TechConnectify omg I have that same power supply :)

@TechConnectify my Thunderbird android App too just won't notify me for one specific e-Mail and it is driving me nuts.

I always have had different ringtones and vibration patterns. But for me the biggest problem is People flooding important chat groups with nonsense. Drowning out the actual information to the point that this information is only read by 1/2 of the members.

@TechConnectify people love your video so much is has over six times the amount of likes than views!
@TechConnectify So this is a weird thing that I do but ... before I stopped using my Palm Pre I copied off all the fonts and sounds. I still use the Palm Guitar sound as my alarm clock tone. I really loved how much work went into the sound design on that OS.
@TechConnectify I set the default notification sound of my phone to silence and selected letters of the NATO alphabet for some chats. I love it and it's super useful! Unfortunately Android doesn't allow me to mute these sounds while my Bluetooth devices are disconnected, or I'm listening to a podcast! Not even using a third-party app!

@TechConnectify The designers of the B-1B bomber decided that we weren't making full use of pilot's ears. So the system included a dozen different alert sounds. It turns out, that was breaking their concentration because they had to decode those different sounds.

The B-2, OTOH, uses voice warnings. So instead of "bing-bing-bong", you get "missile launch."

@TechConnectify praise be. He has gived us a new vid to nourish our souls
@TechConnectify The disappearing and unappreciated art of 16 bit audible alerts 😏
@TechConnectify glad you remember the fediverse crowd, we all love your videos! thanks!

@TechConnectify the three-tone-fire alarm is around in germany too (but city-wide sirens aren't using standardized anything)

not following along for customized notification sounds so much… I much prefer silent notifications and only having important stuff show up on my watch. My attention span is bad enough, I don't need further distractions if possible.

@TechConnectify I think I'll adopt your notification philosphy for my #HomeAssistant when I set it back up in my new home
@hellomiakoda @TechConnectify btw, if you're sending notifications from #HomeAssistant to an Android phone, you can also specify a 'channel' field which then allows you on your phone to give different sounds/vibrations for each channel you specify.
So I have a channel called 'loud' and then any notification being sent with that channel will make a very noticeable sound that's different from normal notifications.
https://community.home-assistant.io/t/how-to-create-a-custom-notification-channel/740493/4
it's not really documented well for some reason though.
How to create a custom notification channel?

Just put it in an action, it will be automatically created after send the notification. Try it in the developer tools: http://homeassistant.local:8123/developer-tools/action action: notify.mobile_app_<your_mobile_device_id> data: message: "Hey Brother!" data: # For Android only channel: "Critical"

Home Assistant Community
@thibaultmol @TechConnectify I'm on Linux Phone, and unfortunately, there's no Home Assistant app for Linux Mobile for some reason. I get those notifications via Gotify. Though, I suppose, since it's just done with curl, I could easily make some more keys to separate them. Though, setting different sounds on Linux Mobile is VERY limited and half broken. Lost of stuff just doesn't make any sound when it should, and none of them let me use different sounds for different things.
@thibaultmol @TechConnectify But, at least at home where notifs are sounds, instead of speaking, I could have a lot of them just be unobtrusice tones. Maybe... I have to think what that will and won't work with for me. Exampe - I NEED the reminder to clean the HVAC filter to speak and be irritating, or it'll never get done.
@TechConnectify "And when we design things well, we can make them useful for all." is such a great quote :)
@TechConnectify Phew! I was worried the goons had paid you a visit. Glad to see you’re still here
@TechConnectify In the comments, I see people who want you saying "bingbong" as an alert. So, I hope these small excerpts count as fair use: https://nextcloud.stephsoft.eu/s/NboLbJpnpt8cYS5

@TechConnectify Well that was a delightful and rambling rant.

FWIW...literally the ONLY thing better about the trains around Toronto than the trains here in the Netherlands is the closing door chime. The Dutch NS single beep is so boring.

I was so glad (legitimately, and not sarcastically like most of my neighbours) when Waterloo region adopted it for their trains and I got to listen to it all day long at my previous house.

@TechConnectify In my experience working in the field, Tech Bros have nothing but utter contempt for anything that is not "one size fits all".

It explains every Bad UX trend from the past 20 years. Touchscreen UIs everywhere. Web design applied to desktop apps. Chatbots replacing every form of communication. "Smart" watches more concerned with fancy screens than having a battery that lasts more than 48 hours.

IDK how to fix this. Good UX just doesn't attract capital or executive attention.

@TechConnectify Part of this is the problem that software just kind of sucks and we haven't figured out a way to build a lot of it without making it brittle (and AI is making it worse).

But even that aside, culturally, no-one who matters gives a shit. Executives want a flashy equity story. So PMs are ordered to deliver some LLM-based bullshit.

Good UX, as you pointed out, is invisible. And that kind of work doesn't drive capital investment for tech firms. So the enshittification continues.

@nathan @TechConnectify

Apple pretty much literally wrote the book on Human Interface Guidelines – and then promptly threw it in the dumpster with LiquidGlass

@TechConnectify if anyone has written something already, I'd love to see what categories of notifications people have configured for their phones. I think it would be easier to switch to a system like this if I could modify someone else's template instead of trying to come up with something from scratch.

I'd also be happy to see a library of unobtrusive notification sounds, but that might be harder to share due to copyrights.

@TechConnectify All I want is the ding-dong noises that old Garmin GPS units used to make. I can’t stand hearing my phone babble needlessly verbose word salad at me while I’m driving, so I keep it muted. But I’m always missing turns and exits as a result.

Just a brief, pleasant sound to let me know I need to do *something* would make a world of difference. I don’t understand why I can’t have this.

@TechConnectify This does resonate (pun intended) a lot with me. The human-centered design process isn't a structural safeguard against isolation of underrepresented users, unfortunately, making everyone worse off (especially here!). I'm not sure on what we could do on a larger scale to approach this though, beyond awareness
@TechConnectify Despite it being, understandably, very ranty, I'm very thankful for you showing your desires and frustration at the status quo
@TechConnectify And now I am planning to get a Pebble watch...

@TechConnectify

Really fun video. It's very interesting hearing all the ways we could use audio to make things better. I have been wanting to make my own ringtones for my phone, so it's good to keep in mind not being obtrusive. I may have to make a whole suite of notification sounds for my phone, so I can tell what app is trying to notify me.

The pebble watch seems interesting too when it comes to smart watches.

@TechConnectify

along with the disappearing art of cellphone sound design – most phone makers have completely removed the tiny notification LED (a nice slow, unobtrusive blink when you had unread message) – Blackberry even allowed up to 7 different colors for different notifications

@lisamelton @TechConnectify I've always just understood that the 3 beeps were fire warnings. I like that you didn't demonstrate with the standard beepy sound that usually seems to go with it.
@lisamelton @TechConnectify Also, as a blind person, audible alerts are something I care a lot about. Loving watching this.
