I am very sorry for you to need to cope with this:

the best option for private chatting TODAY when it comes to #security, usability/user-friendly, #resilience, #digitalindependence and #freedom is #DeltaChat a chat app that uses #SMTP + #IMAP at its backbone, not your favorite "perfect" chat protocol, you don't need new better protocols, you need tools that actually work for the people

#xmpp #matrix #simplex #signal

@adbenitez currently notifications are incredibly unreliable. I would love to use it more but when I cant be sure if the app will reliably tell me I got a message it makes that very hard.
@liaizon if you don't have push notifications you need to enable the app to always run in background, anyways there is also #UnifiedPush support coming, it also depends on the provider you are using, and ofc maybe you are hitting some bug 🤔
@adbenitez I have push notifications enabled and I even update the app thru Google play
@liaizon mmmh that would be a bug then, it would be good if you help with logs and debugging the situation, make sure you are allowing the app to run in background (disable the battery optimization thing for DC)
@adbenitez is this really not a reported issue? I can upload some logs but the reliability of deltachat notifications has been a constant issue as long as I have used it on every device and configuration I have tried

@liaizon it doesn't happen to me and many more, but for sure I have seen some people that claim they don't get push notifications, but without someone close to look at the problem in action and see what is actually happening it is hard

it could be the push notifications server, or your chatmail server, or maybe even you are getting the push notifications fine and it is your phone killing/restricting the app from processing the messages in background

@adbenitez I have tried with combinations of iOS, Android, Mac OS and Linux on testrun and your arcane server and have noticed issues with the reliability of notifications. While this is understandable in diverse situations of different configurations it seems like a issue that has been continually occurring for everyone I have talked to who is trying to use deltachat and isn't a developer of deltachat
@liaizon odd I use it with friends and family and never had a problem :(
but as said, it is known that it is not working for some people, so no doubting you, but it is not like they are not working at all, it works for a lot of people
@adbenitez its frustrating cause it works great alot and then sometimes super laggy and sometimes no notifications at all.
@liaizon we are planning on trying to debug this problem "soon" and try to find the root of it, because it is very important for a chat app :D
@adbenitez that's great to hear. I'm definitely aligned in wanting Delta Chat to work
@liaizon btw, have you tried using the permanent notification??? if even then you miss messages that would hint to a problem in the DC core rather than push notifications
@adbenitez I just turned on that setting. ill try it out and see if that makes it any better. I had never tried that before.
@liaizon @adbenitez
In case this helps...
At some stage I has notification issues, on my Android : GrapheneOS device.
But it turned out to be a relay that was not reliable.
Apart from that, no issues at all. Yes have it running unrestricted in the background !
