Not voted. I'd liked this poll to be multiple choice. For me this would be Delta Chat and XMPP as both are equally important.

@sarah Okay if simplex is off the table my next favourites are Cwtch, Briar, and Meshtastic they each have different use cases but none have quantum resistant encryption so if I had to ditch simplex I might have to use Signal the only other messenger I know to have quantum resistant encryption but I'd had to weigh that against the anonymity problems with signal

They want to monetize certain access to official simplex servers by charging the owners of large groups in crypto. You dont need to worry about this if you self host or use any other simplex relay that isnt interested in doing this

@KoosPol @sarah Thats another reason why I recommend self hosting a simplex relay. But also evgeny has reaffirmed on multiple occasions that this will prbably be for large groups only (costs dependent) so it could be worse
Also simplex is a protocol not a platform evgeny has little to no technical control over content even when its hosted on their own servers, they can disable invites and they can delete media files if they are reported directly by someone in the same room
But because its decentralised we can carve out our own spaces for our own revolutionary purposes and never have to interact with any of them
@sarah Simplex has no essential centralised features, relay servers default to ones controlled by the simplex org but you can change them to self hosted ones in the client network settings. When you change relay servers here any new invites you create will link to queue pair addresses hosted on the new relay server you specify

People's expectation regarding messengers seem to be very different so hard to say what works best for whom. #xmpp, #simplex, #matrix may work for you. My friends and family are using #deltachat. It was the first opensource messanger which worked out of the box for my contacts so everyone was happy. It fits my needs so I am also happy with it:
* strong focus on user experience
* working push notifications on all OS
* smooth multi device capabilities
* 100% client based, no servers, just "relays" for message transport. Relays can be changed at any time and have no meaning
* reliable clients, no message loss, no crashes
* You can use multiple profiles on the same device for different purposes
It does NOT support public groups. It is great for groups with people who trust each other (group members have the same rights). Calls are in testing phase, not stable yet.
Can't say if it fits your needs, just wanted to give an overview.

@ac @ente @elementary That's a interesting tool, it lists many niche options also, like the convenient email provider Migadu π I made one about me too, it was fun! As DNS I usually prefer OpenNIC but it's not listed, I will open a pull request as well

@svans #Threema is not safer than #SimpleX ... Threema is also safe in its own way but not more securely or better encrypted than #SimpleXChat or #DeltaChat ...
DonΒ΄t ignore #Threema !
