If they pass these absurd laws I hope cyclists get out there and claim the lane as is their right, and remember that it is illegal in this state for a car to pass within 1.5m of a cyclist.

@Unixbigot only on roads marked as over 60km/hr.
On roads where the limit is 60kph or less, the overtaking distance is 1m.
Not that motorists know how big 1m or 1.5m is anyway.

@lcwheeler my current theory is it’s regulatory capture by the motor vehicle insurance industry that fears the collapse of revenue due to micromobility. eBike and scooter use is booming here.
It goes
* foment panic about the “danger” of e-mobility
* cripple use of bicycles
* introduce registration and licensing for non crippled bicycles.
Currently bicycles over 250w are flat out illegal here. Registration and minimum insurance for “heavy motorcycles” is $1000/y.
Is this about those fast e-bikes, like everywhere else?
Fast, non-pedal-assist ebikes really belong in the category of urban motorcycles. Those used to fall under different rules: lower age limit, helmet use, in some places license plates. They are not like pedal-assist e-bikes.
There is now a continuum from the kids' scooter to the electric Harley Davidson. But laws and law makers have not caught up with that.
@CelloMomOnCars there is already no legal class here for any e-bike that can exceed 25 km/h or 250w *peak*.
There is manufactured panic about “illegal motorcycles”, but no talk about a path to making car-replacement practical.
Yeah.
New classes of e-bikes need to be defined, and rules for each one.
This is the case even for the Netherlands, where two wheeled things are regarded a legit means of transportation (rather than sport, for for children).
Everywhere, very fast and heavier e-bikes *are* a menace. That's doesn't mean that all e-bikes are a menace.
@Unixbigot I'd be okay with something like that if they also halved the speed limit on all roads 😂
The fact that this would never happen, juxtaposed with the fact that they seemingly think it makes sense to do this to cyclists makes it very clear that the authorities in queensland do not take cyclists seriously.
@Unixbigot here I was thinking that Mickelberg and the LNP were just ignorant of cyclist needs but that quote really speaks to the politicisation of this issue.
> In a statement, Queensland's Minister for Transport, Brent Mickelberg, said the government was prepared to make "tough decisions".
> "Labor funded and put illegal e-scooters and e-bikes on the streets, while we're removing them," he said.
🙄
@Unixbigot - I won't ride on the road here, because I want to live.
The only road I can take to the train station is 70 km/h, and full of monster utes and SUVs.
I also won't ride on paths, because 10 km/h is not doable, and I don't want $500 fine for riding 21+ km/h.
Queensland did a full U-turn from a smart state under Anna Bligh to a backwards, hateful one under David Crisafulli: anti-renewables, anti-trams, anti-railways, anti-trans, anti-children, anti-protest, and now anti-bike riders.
