On roads where the limit is 60kph or less, the overtaking distance is 1m.
Not that motorists know how big 1m or 1.5m is anyway.

Lucas C. Wheeler@Unixbigot That is ridiculously slow, to the point that it seems intentionally designed to make it difficult for people to cycle. I would have a tough time going that slow on a purely mechanical bicycle. I can understand having some kind of speed limit on multi-use paths, because where I live people on throttle e-bikes are regularly blasting past walkers going about 40km/h, no exaggeration. *That* is legitimately dangerous to pedestrians. But, 10kph?!!
@lcwheeler my current theory is it’s regulatory capture by the motor vehicle insurance industry that fears the collapse of revenue due to micromobility. eBike and scooter use is booming here.

* introduce registration and licensing for non crippled bicycles.
Currently bicycles over 250w are flat out illegal here. Registration and minimum insurance for “heavy motorcycles” is $1000/y.

Fast, non-pedal-assist ebikes really belong in the category of urban motorcycles. Those used to fall under different rules: lower age limit, helmet use, in some places license plates. They are not like pedal-assist e-bikes.
There is now a continuum from the kids' scooter to the electric Harley Davidson. But laws and law makers have not caught up with that.
@CelloMomOnCars there is already no legal class here for any e-bike that can exceed 25 km/h or 250w *peak*.
There is manufactured panic about “illegal motorcycles”, but no talk about a path to making car-replacement practical.

The fact that this would never happen, juxtaposed with the fact that they seemingly think it makes sense to do this to cyclists makes it very clear that the authorities in queensland do not take cyclists seriously.
